I have just found out that the 4.2 Litre Diesel was never used in front of the A343F transmission in the US. I believe that the 80 Series and possibly the 100 series was never introduced into the U.S market with the 4.2 Diesel as factory fit. Is this the case all over the world? I'm looking for a bell housing and convertor to suit the A343F to the 4.2 Diesel because I received an E-mail from someone that is wanting to do this in the U.S. I see know reason why it wouldn't work but don't know if the 4.2 was ever mated to the A343F transmission. The bell housing and convertor might not even exist. Regards Rodney

The only diesel 80 I have seen in the US was from Belgium and is a 5 speed. I would ask on the 80s cool list.

Rodney,
I do know that NO dsl 80 or 100 was ever offered for sale in the US, all we got were gassers, same goes for Canada

Below is pure speculation from the Toyota EPC for europe(and its in Russian!)

I show the auto trany overhaul gasket kit(04351-60020) is the same for the 01.01.1990-01.08.1992. FJ80,HDJ80,HZJ80..ATM;

so from the above we know that both used the A440F, correct?

then I show this
04351-60110 GASKET KIT, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OVERHAUL 01.08.1992-01.01.1995 HDJ80..ATM;

04351-60110 GASKET KIT, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OVERHAUL 01.01.1995-01.01.1998 FZJ80..ATM

so if these 2 kits are the same, and we know the 95+ fzj80 used the 343(at least in US), then we can assume that the HDJ80 uses the 343 from 93-95 and if thats the case then yes the combo your looking for does exist.....

I also show
04351-60060 GASKET KIT, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OVERHAUL 01.08.1992-01.01.1995 FZJ80,HDJ80..ATM;
04351-60060 GASKET KIT, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OVERHAUL 01.08.1992-01.01.1995 HDJ80..ATM;

so it apears that both tranies were offered, the A442F and the A343F

Not sure if this is any help. I will dig thru some more stuff.......

I do not recall the 343 being behind a Diesel engine. Are the Diesel 105's still using a 442? If so, I would speculate that the 343 is Petrol only.

A guess from the diesel deprived parts guy....... :rolleyes:

...Poor guy goes fishing , and he ends up with a bad case of diesel-envy . *Rocking the boat* - Green with what ??

It was my understanding that the diesels stuck with the 440s and then the new ones went to the a750fs which is a 5 speed auto. But I've been wrong before. It is pretty hard to get too excited about stuff that you can't get easily in your home country.

Mr T,

I DO NOT have Diesel envy, I have a 6BT Cummins powered Dodge one ton 4WD crew cab. ::) (all twenty one feet, five and three quarters inches of it)

Have you ever priced an Injector pump for a Toyota Diesel engine? It will stop your heart. :eek:
A new turbo for my Cummins is bout 800 bucks, one for a 22RTEC is close to THREE GRAND :eek: (Yes, just the turbocharger not a whole motor)

I don't need no stinkin' Jap Diesel motor :flipoff2:

My Duramax keeps me happy when I want to hear a turbo spin up.

hmm, my 91 has that nice old bus tranny....

anyone have a diesel for me to install? I would be happy to be the test bed :D

CDan ever visit the TDR? I had a 2000 and then a 2002 3500 4x4 CTD. Great trucks. Mine turned into a 350Z, but my sex life is now better :)

I was really really close to buying a 91 with a 1hd-t conveted 80. The availability of the parts not so much the price scared the heck out of me. My real test is that if a vehicle breaks can I get parts in North Dakota. Sounds Crazy but we have family in the Midwest and we travel there frequently. Something always seems to go wrong in North Dakota. Fuel pumps(LC and Toyota mini truck), Cats(bmw with bad sensor), Clutch Slave (ford with only 3k on it), Blew a tire (LC), froze a gas line (LC), etc.... I cannot afford to be stuck in some place like North Dakota while I wait 3 weeks to 3 months to get a Toyota part from overseas.

Cdan, what year Cummins? I think the newer electric injection pumps will send you into sticker shock too. 98s are around $2800.

I have one of those 22RTEs sitting in my driveway right now. 79,000 original miles. Unfortunately, it is mated to an auto tranny. 3k for the turbo. Dang I think that truck should be parted out and put a regular 22RE with a 5spd.

Although John is onto something with the part numbers no one has ever seen or heard of anybody having a Land Cruiser with a Factory fit 4.2 Diesel with A343F transmission. Could be that the output of the Diesel exceeds the torque capabilities of the A343F. I've seen hundreds of A442F factory fitted to the 4.2 Diesel and have heard of the A750F 5 Speed used as well. I was hoping that the A343F might have been used in Europe or South Africa.
Regards
Rodney
