Looking to buy our first 80 series and was wondering what kind of gas millage I can expect. I am not sure what engine/year we are going for just want to see what they get. I have had two 60 series and they both got around 16-17mpg hwy. sorry if this a re-post I searched but did not find my answer.

My 3FE gets 15mpg on the freeway driving not-very-conservatively (I have no doubt I could easily see 16). Still only does 12 around town though...

With my mods, 33s, stock gears and about 6600lbs running weight, I get about 12 mpg on the open highway. The best I ever saw stock was 15mpg.

I think a major varible not often considered is the gas used. Oregon gas sucks big time. I and others in my state have noticed major mileage gains when we travel outside the state, especially heading east.

In the end, the 1FZ is more effiecent and more powerful than the 3FE.

I had a 92 3FE set up stock then later with 33's.

I now have a 96 with the 1FZ. I swapped to 33's, then supercharged it, then 35's, then regeared 4.88's.

Throughout both trucks and all mods, the mileage was always the SAME. 11-12 mpg.

Gas mpg and landcruiser dont go together. Like the Sopranos say:

"fo get about it!"

I'd personally get the 3FE-powered rig. I don't know why, but I really like the slower "tank" feel a lot more. Not to mention the lack of PHH and headgasket problems :D

IMO the headgasket issues of the 1FZ are the product of internet over-discussion.

Sure there have been some, but not as bad as youd think reading the forums.

I would not make a buying decision based on it nor do it as PM.

Won't Toyota do the HG service for free? Wasn't there a recall?

I'd personally get the 1FZ-FE powered rig. I don't know why, but I really like the slightly faster "tank" feel for some reason. Not to mention the lack of oil galley plug problems.:D ;)

Haven't dealt with that one yet (might help if I knew what an oil galley was...)

1993 Landcruiser 240,000 miles on the 1fz
with stock tires/no lift, best mpg was 19.7mpg on a yellowstone vacation, never above 60 mph
with 255/85's and no lift the best mpg is 16.5 uncorrected, loaded down with camping gear, 5 total occupants, hitch haul and running A/C.

Stock truck 1FZ-FE at 55-65 mph highway gave me 15.9 mpg. Mileage gets much worse at higher speeds (70-80mph). City is around 10-12 mpg.

Pretty tough straight six either way you go.

They both suck gas. The 1FZ-FE maybe slightly less, but it still eats through 95 liters pretty quick. If you want something to replace your 60 an 80 is a great choice. If you want something that gets better gas mileage, get a van or a car.

The bottom line is: It's a Land Cruiser. Gas mileage was probably the last thing Toyota was concerned with when they built it.

Mileage should be very similar for both models but it really depends on how it is driven. Everyone has their own criteria but consider that the 3fe was dropped due lack of power. I am not sure where you are located but generally the 93 and new will perform much better at higher altitudes.

No, there have not been any Special Service Campaigns (a true "recall" is generally related to a safety item) for headgaskets the Land Cruiser.

Makes sense.

I agree with Shawn's post #6. The newer you go the better (OBD II, 134a, etc), up until there is a clear emissions limit. I drive a 97. 96 and older are not smogged where I am at. "Missed it by that much"...
