91 fj80, cat heat shields rusted and rattling, driving me crazy. Want to remove or gut the cats so heat shields will be gone. Muhahaha! On North Shore of Kauai, and have limited resources. I have searched this site for basic instructions, tools and parts required to accomplish this but have been unsuccessful. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2 options come to mind; one is to remove or secure the heat shields. I used hose clamps to secure the heat shields on our 92. The other option is to take it to a muffler shop and have them replace it or straight pipe it if Hawaii allows. Your converter is actually two small converters with a Y pipe at the exit. IMHO, It would be difficult to remove and replace unless you have a shop set up to do so.

Copy that Summit Cruisers, hose clamps and J B Weld have been utilized. Ready to remove both cats before y pipe. Just wondering if anyone has done this in backyard environment and has any pointers.

Here's what mine looks like.

Yeah! That's what I'm talking about! Did you have this done by a shop? If not I'd like to hear details of how you accomplished this. It looks as if the heat shields on the down pipes are still in place. I really appreciate these pics, thank you.

I am sorry I did not do it and yes she still has the front heat shields.

A little story behind it…. I bought her from the original owner ( a 91 like yours) and they took very good care of her. They kept every receipt along with (to me a mystery) business card from their local Police Department. It was not until last year I noticed she had no Cats, so my guess is someone stole the Cats and they had a shop install the strait pipes.

If you want more detailed pictures let me know. She is in storage right now so I can take them this weekend.

I can't quite tell from the pics, but are the o2 sensors in their original location? I took my 92 to my local muffler shop and the guy said he didn't think he could remove my cats and replace with straight pipe without damaging the o2 bungs. Does that sound right?

Toyotafj..does your engine run correctly without the o2 sensors? I want to do the same thing but I am not sure how the mass air flow unit will work without the 02 sensors. Thanks, larry

It has both O2 Sensors installed. I have her in storage right now so tomorrow or Monday I will have better pictures showing show
it is setup.

Mine has the cats removed, O2 sensors stayed, no issues...

Thanks for the detailed pics. They definitely give me a better frame of reference. I'm still debating on whether or not I want to do this myself. Welded a lot in the past, but only on heavy structural steel. For fear of not getting a good cover on the weld/burning pinholes into it, I'll probably just bite the bullet and have to pay to have someone around here do this for me :(

I pull my cats and cut the flanges off and cut pipes to length (pipe was maybe $20 total at parts store) and paid some shmuck $25 at Midas to weld them. Looked alright but they leak like crazy, get the supplies and have someone legit weld them up.

Matt, I'm assuming you put the flanges on to make your setup non-permanent? If that's the case, are they leaking through your O-ring? Just trying to understand what you're saying - have someone legit weld up the flanges and then go with the O-ring setup, or just have someone weld up the straight pipes and make it a permanent setup?
