No im interested to hear how you go aswell.

Ive worked out that my problem is the wiring between the alternator and the battery. My alt is putting out 16v. But at the battery its down to 12.9v. This has shot the battery too so some new wiring, a stronger ground and a new alt to battery cable is in order

Thanks! I'll follow up with my result and hopefully someone else can learn from these issues.

Currently batteries are showing about 26 Volts on the charger and haven't increased in a few hours.

This is a timely thread as I'm having almost the exact same issue with my BJ73. Here's my post in the 70-Series Section below.

I'm getting my batteries off the charger this morning and hopefully re-install them tonight and see what happens. The curve ball for me is I'm working with 24V.

If I'm hijacking please let me know and I'll retreat.

Hi there.

Hearing clicking noises when you expect to hear your engine turning over is a common symptom of having "flat-battery/batteries so hopefully you'll be mobile again once they're recharged.

With 24V, you have the added complications of:
  • not finding it so easy to get someone in your neighbourhood to hook up jumper-leads (unless you have heavy commercial vehicles nearby to get the 24V required),
  • making sure both of your 12V batteries share the load equally (and so 12V should never be tapped off one battery to run a 12V radio for instance), and
  • making sure both your 12V batteries get charged at the same rate (which in the vehicle is normally achieved by ensuring they are both the same brand/model/size and were purchased at exactly the same time).
Good luck with your endeavors too...

Edit..... ooops. Reading the rest of your post it does appear to me like your starter failed to disengage from your flywheel ring gear (and kept spinning with it after your engine had started). So I agree that it sounds a good idea to remove the starter and check it out (or have it checked by someone else if you're not confident of doing it yourself).

It might pay to check your fusible links.

In case you're not aware, your BJ42 came with fusible links to protect your loom wiring from short-circuit damage (and thus to protect your vehicle against electrical fires).

A short section of smaller-gauge wire was connected into each main loom wire near your battery's positive terminal with the idea that - were a short-circuit to occur - it would melt/blow first because of its smaller diameter.

These fusible links do deteriorate so perhaps this may be the cause of your voltage drop. (However, if this is happening your ammeter should be simultaneously showing a big negative current swing ..... unless of course one of the 5A fuses protecting it has blown ...which would not be at all unlikely in the circumstances.)

They look like ordinary automotive wire and deteriorate by becoming corroded and by breaking stands (often just from vibration).

Here are my fusible links:

Good news on my side. Installed charged batteries and the Cruiser fired up no problems. In the end the batteries were holding a little over 25 volts on the charger.
