I can't get my water pump pulley to fit on water pump. i looked at 3B engine manual and everything looks like what i have. no missing parts that i see. i bolted up new water pump. when i try to put on the pulley, the back of pulley hits the water pump before threaded studs get to mounting holes on the pulley. i mock up belt to check angle. i can't figure it out. am i missing a spacer? do i have wrong pulley? wrong pump? engine is a 83 from a BJ42. pulley is from unknown year BJ60. that shouldn't matter should it? pics below

That pulley looks deeper then the one I have on my truck and it's a sept 83 BJ60 with a 3B. What pump was there before and how did that fit? when you have the pulley touching the water pump housing are the crank and water pump grooves perfectly aligned or a bit off? (hard to tell in the pic).

they are a bit off. i bought engine last year. been buying parts from canada to put it together. water pump was given to me by previous owner of engine. pulley i bought last month with fan and thermostat housing. looks like i have wrong pulley. anyone have a different one to sell?

i could not find a part number. does the yellow stripe mean anything?

Yea it looks off, as for the stripe, I find stuff like that usually on junk yard (used car parts) stores parts. Some of the components on my truck have a mark on them in paint but that is usually smaller and only for alignment purposes and has been there from, as far as I know, the begining.

I ran into the same problem when i put an 85 3B into my 80 BJ40, I tried to use the 80 B water pump pulley on the 3B, and discovered the 3B has a longer snout on the water pump. there is a deeper pulley, about 3/4 inch difference on the 3B. You are trying to go the other way, from the long snout to a short one, so the pulley bottoms out...

the other tell tale is the size of the studs, the short snout pulley is drilled out for smaller studs, so is the fan. On yours it will be the other way, the holes will be huge on both fan and pulley...

so i either need different fan and pulley or i need a different water pump?
since i have to get most parts from canada it would probably be more cost effective to replace the water pump as i may be able to locate that from an auto supply store. the fan and pulley i would have to located on line from canada then i may get same setup again. what would you advise?

mezekely, what water pump do i ask for ? i looked back at the thread where i bought pulley and fan. it was from 1981 bj60. do i need to order a 81 bj60 3B water pump?

it was not on the engine when i bought it. PO gave me this one it was almost new but had been installed.

The difference maybe due to a waterpump that takes a fan clutch and one that takes a fixed fan.

Hey buckaroo,

Your issue is a small one. The 3B (in N.America/Canada at least) powered trucks upgraded to power steering for the 1983 production year. This required an additional belt to drive the power steering pump. The PS belt is driven from a double groove crank pulley (as opposed to the single groove pulley you likely have). In order to clear the new belt, the fan needed to be located further forward. This was achieved by using a water pump with a longer 'snout'. With the fan (similar/same to the non-PS fan) mounting further forward, the (shallow) fan pulley no longer lines up with it's groove on the crank pulley. Toyota's solution was a 'deep' pulley like you've got. (your pulley matches your engine, but your water pump is older. the water pump will work without power steering)

I've got a spare shallow pulley if you want. It'll be cheaper than ordering a 'new' water pump. I'll trade it for your deep pulley (though if you want to upgrade to power steering later -- you should keep it, and just buy my pulley for now). email me if you're interested.

regards,
Steve

thanks for the help steve. and i appreciate the offer on the pulley but as mszekely pointed our above, my fan and pulley both have big mounting holes. since i have a matching fan and pulley, and they are a matched pair as i bought the both from a 81 bj60 in B.C. i think i will get another pump. my pump has very small studs to mount the fan. do you have or can you get the water pump that i need?

His pulley will be the small stud pulley, I wouldn't screw with the water pump, just make sure the passage holes line up, I know it's supposed to be a bolt on, but it appears that mine, looking at the engine from the front, had a different passage on the left side. I concur with the power steering theory, my 3B came out of a BJ70 with PS,
I would get the short pulley, and do your best to line up and centre your fan, way cheaper and I think more reliable than screwing around changing pumps...I'm running my B fan from the 80 B motor on the BJ70 pump after I drilled out the fan, if you were worried about it, get some inserts made to keep yuor big hole fan centered on the small stud pump...

this is an easy fix, nothing to worry about : )

ok smcrusin i'll take that narrow pulley. do you take pay pal or money order.
