if this has been covered ad nausaeum i apologize, but i did not find it on the faq list or in a search. can somebody post up some major performance differences between the two engines. i have never driven either of them, but am in the market for either a bj60 or an hj60. i know the 3b is 4cyl and the 2h is 6cyl. i was just wondering about gas mileage for either of them in a 60 series, availability, turbo upgradability for either engine, any common issues for either engine. also if there is anybody with experience with both engines, is there any real difference in feel between the two? off the line, on the trail, on the highway? thanks.

bc cruiser- do you have experience with both of these engines? is there any noticeable difference in the feel while driving them? thanks for the information already provided. it really helps.

I have no experience with the 2H. From reading many posts here on both it's my understanding that the difference in power and torque is not proportional to the difference in fuel mileage-- i.e. the 2H has noticeably better getty-up but only looses a few MPGs.

One of the biggest considerations is that the 3B has oil piston skirt cooling jets, while the 2H does not. Some folks don't think this is an issue, but I would take a turbo'd 3B over a 2H any day. 12HT is another issue, but I just don't feel I need the power--turbo'd 3B or a 13BT would undoubtedly satisfy me as I am more or less content with my two pretty gutless normally aspirated 4 cyl. diesels.

In a 60 series I would seriously consider a turbo if you get a BJ60, whereas an n/a HJ60 is probably fine. I would work that into your cost analysis for each rig.

I think the 2H has almost a 4 litre engine not a 3 litre.
Maybe just a typo?
3.980 Litres

i dont have any experience with either engine but i asked this same question a few months ago (maybe 6) and my understanding is that they both have their pro's and con's, neither one has any large differences in power and torque...keep in mind thats just my impression from other peoples opinions and not from my own experience...

I thought yes .. coz 2H is a 4.0 L engine ..

I'm a 2H man .. only coz is the engine that come in my HJ-60 and it never fail to me .. I'm also pretty sure 3B is a great engine, and you can find a lots of thread with long fights about it ..

just search ..

2 more cilinders are 2 more cilinders ..

both are dreadfully slow without a turbo.

Personally I like the 3b due to sleeves and piston skirt oiling. Other than that they are both pretty rugged engines that with proper maintenace and treated right will last a long time.

No, sorry. I was just posting some specs from another site. But if I had to pick one it would probley be the 3B as stated above, cause of its liners and piston skirt cooling, then just toss a turbo on. I'm not sure what tranny you have but a 2H will bolt up to a 2F tranny, so that makes it alittle better for installing.

I have both engines. The 2H is much smoother and feels much stronger. with the turbo it is almost a fast 60 series :D, and I can do most highway inclines in 4th or 5th, where I would have to go to 3rd with the 3B (both have manual 5 speeds)

2H mileage is not as good as 3B (22 vs 25 on average).

That said, I love driving the 70 with the 3B, but it is slow driving, which I enjoy.

Parts are easy to get for both.
