Hi Mudders,

I’m currently replacing my 1984 3B valve cover gasket. Unfortunately I noticed some play in the pushrods, I am not sure what it means, or what to do. How can I fix this problem? Is it serious?

I am running on a budget and I am a little unsure about this. Check out my video below.

Have you ever adjusted your valve lash? These engines have solid lifters and when the lifter is on the small part of the cam lobe (when the valve is fully closed) there is supposed to be a gap that is measured between the top of the valve stem and the rocker arm. For any given crank/cam position, some rocker arms should be tight (valve is being opened) and some should seem loose (valve is closed). As the engine ages, the gap will increase due to wear, and therefore the valves need to be adjusted to bring the gap back into spec.

A valve adjustment is routine maintenance on these engines.

@2mbb nailed it. Gotta adjust those suckers using a feeler gauge.

No fret, it’s an easy job, and these engines are forgiving if you get it ‘super good enough’
