3B or not 3B, that is the question

OK, I have already started work on project "LandRunner", which is essentially a 1981 BJ60 with rear end removed and a <89 4Runner rear end mated to it. My question now comes in that I have just been offered a free 86 HJ60 running and having passed emmissions. Apparently it is pretty rusted and has some electrical issues. How hard will it be to swap in the 2H engine? Assuming I want to keep my vehicle 12v what parts need to be swapped off of the 3B or removed from 2H? By the stats I've seen, they are very similar engines and there's not a huge gain in HP or Torque. Guess what I'm asking is, does the HJ60 (from Ontario) offer me a lot of new options or just more problems. Also, what might be the value of a used and running emission passed 2h if I just decide to sell? Oh, and at the very minimum, I need PS for my rig and the 81 didn't come with it, did the 86 with 2H? will it be easily swapped over to give me PS if I decide to keep the 3B? Thanks for all your help!

Not sure about the PS.
I would think it could be swapped, but am not sure.
Others could say better than I.

As for the 3B vrs 2H, there are people on both sides of the fence.
Personally, I would just turbo the 3B.
There are many threads on 2H versus 3B if you search.
Some people love the 3B and some love the 2H.

Cheers,
Nick

dont get people started on that fight again...i tried figureing out the 3B vs 2H issue a while back....just stick with the 3B that you have and flip the 2H, prolly get 1K+ for it i would think depending on its condition bla bla bla, i dont know a whole lot about what they go for but should get over 1k i would think.

I figured as much. Why is it whenever I have a decent question, I can never find a clear concise write-up in the searches and it's always some hot-button topic that gets people all riled up. Oh right, that's why! Anyhow, Turbo-ing (is that a word) my 3b is the most likely way I will go unless the 2H has a lot less KM on it. (3B has 460k), (2H is unknown at this time). But the stock torque and HP #'s are not impressive enough to deal with a swap. I also don't know what tranny is attached to the 2H and if it is a 4 or 5 speed, do I even want it with my 3B. I've been told the 4 speed is perfect for the 3B but maybe a turboed 3B is a bit better with the 5 spd. I guess it's more the PS that I'm wondering about.
1. Did PS come stock on all 86 HJ60's? or a lot of them?
2. How much of the stock strongarm steering do I need to replace? Tie-Rod to steering wheel?(please note sarcastic tone) Either way, Project LandRunner is back underway and will update as I go
Thanks for all input

Probably the answer to that is that they are both well proven engines and its more important to get one that wont let you down.
IMO the 2H is nicer to drive ,has a bit more power and feels as if it has wider power band.
The plus side to the 3B is its more turbo ready.

Both of them were in used Toyota trucks, forklifts, buses and of course the landcruiser.
Both have been used as stationary engines for power, refridgeration or pumping water.
Both of them have traversed the most hostile parts of the planet and not let anyone down.
Get the best one you can find regardless of the B or H tag.;)

hobiebestfriend-
I'm in the process of tearing apart a bj60 and still have ALL of the PS stuff (ps box, tie rods, pitman arm). The one thing I don't have is the pump. I have one from an FJ but that's on the wrong side. If you decide to do the PS set up let me know. Cheers.

What vehicles could I use the PS pump from? Toy mini-truck? Can I use a wide range of vehicles steering pumps? I didn't realize that much had to be swapped. can't say I had done that much research yet, but good to know. Will probably be in touch in the not so distant future. How much?

If you're going to get a p/s pump for the 2H, make sure it is from a 1985 upward vane type pump. The earlier ones were the slipper type and aren't worth their weight in scrap!!;) The vane pump is smoother, freer running and produces more pressure, which makes steering easier.

In the power steering seccion I'm pretty sure ·B is a lots better than 2H why .. the complicate position of the PS pump in my 2H is a issue for me ..

but anycase is a pump .. and you can relocate with smart brain .. not to fight I'm a 2H man .. no matter what are 2 more cilinders ..

But honestly .. swap .. if your 3B are running fine .. is not my best option .. cvoz you don't really need. For more power you can put a turbo and you are done.
