Hello guys,

This is my first time posting the thread. Got a few burning question and I really need tou guys to help me.

I owns a 1983 FJ40 and had the engine swapped by previous owner to 3B.

My questions are:

1. I'm interested in turbocharging the engine. I've read a lot of the posting and if I'm not mistaken non of them mention about internal engine preparations. Do I have to change my pistons, conrods, valves before I proceed with the turbocharging. Can you guys tell me what to do?

2. Gearbox. Currently my rigs is using 4 spd gearbox. I would like to change to 5 spd gearbox. Any recommendations for gearbox n transfer box. FYI i will not be involve with rockcrawling. My place in Malaysia it's all about mud.

That's all. Maybe i should post the rest of the questions in another threads.

The 3b is good to go for a turbo as is. Do your proper maintenance including a valve adjustment and away you go.
As for the 5 speed, an H55 from a later cruiser is the easiest.

Oh yeah, and welcome!

Like he said. All good. Turbo away.

Welcome to the forum. Lots of good info here.

Do I have to change the internal engine parts such as pistons, valves camshaft since reliablility is my priority. I planned to go for boost some where in the region of 0.6 bar. Thanks.

The 3B engine is pretty beefy and can easily support a turbo. IIRC, it's just a 13BT without a turbo and Indirect injection

.6 bar equals 8.7 psi. ALL good. No need to beef up the engine. Install turbo and run this pressure.

Thanks a lot guys.

How about the transfer box. Do i have to maintain mine n install h55 just like mac says?? By the way that H55 comes from which cruiser?? LC80??

MY 84 BJ60 had this transmission H55f

H55Fs were used on many trucks. HJ60, BJ70, behind the 1HZ engine, on some gassers...you name it.
You can get a new one for 1800US, but usually this will be one for a 2F or a 2H input shaft. The 3B input has more splines, and a smaller pilot bearing. Make sure you get one for the 3b, since changing the shaft is a major undertaking.

What do you mean by that shaft? Pls clarify.

The shaft is the one that goes between the engine and the tranny. It involves nearly a complete teardown of the transmission to be able to change it out. I have changed an H42 for a 2F to a 3B and it was not easy to get it apart.

How about the shaft fm tranny to axles?

With the 5 speed you need to shorten the rear driveshaft and lengthen the front one. The 5 speed is about 3" longer.
