Does anyone know what colors are for the 3B engines? Is the block black and the other pieces grey? Any certain color codes for them? Also, should I take it to a diesel specialist to rebuild or Toyota import specialist? I dont know if I will find someone here in N. Carolina that specializes in both? As far as engine and trans/ transfer rebuild kits, which are the best ones? Koyo bearings came factory? Also, my oil pressure gauge is kinda slow when reving engine or starting up is that normal? How about white smoke when first starting up?

Roberto

I thought they were mainly blue or red/orange:confused:
Koyo bearings are toyota main supplier but I think they may use a different company for the engine bearings.
3B engine rebuild kits are cheap so I would source an OEM kit if possible.
There is also some quality aftermarket kits out there ,just make sure its not made in China.
These kits are popular with australian engine rebuilders. http://www.acl.com.au/

I would get a diesel specialist. They are not a high tech engine, any competent rebuilder should be able to do a good job

Its not too much of a problem if the oil pressure is slow to climb ,just be patient with it. An oil change can help
White smoke can mean air is getting into the fuel system.
If its just a half second flash its ok but if its billowing out and its lingers then you have a problem.

I appreciate the info, I would love to go with OEM as much as I can but we all know the cost in that, the engine rebuild kits I am seeing are between $1200-$1500 USD so if I can get an OEM kit for that I will. I was not sure if KOYO was OEM but I will try to get the kits that have these for I am going to be rebuilding Trans, transfer, engine, rearends and whatever else? The white smoke is only for a second or 2 and then it stops. Thanks again

The 3B engine in my 1985 BJ70
uses an EDIC fuel control electric motor that over fuels your engine for a short period of time after start up. The white smoke is normal for a brief period after first starting.

SO why does it need a rebuild? Low compression....hard to start etc....

I though this was a sound truck you have?

These engines can push 600,000 kms before rebuild. What's wrong with yours?

It runs fine I guess, I know nothing about diesels? Odometer shows 400,000k whenever odometer stopped. I plan on doing a frame up resto in which I am buying all the new parts this whole year and then tearing it down at the end of the year. It will be brand new when it is done. Rebuilding everything to new!

Well, that said.

I understand you are rebuilding it. But why not do some compression tests on the engine and see what it is like. Post the results here.

If you service the injectors and it is fine running, it doesn't need an overhaul. In fact if you get good results with the compression test you probably got another 200k to go on it.

I still would rebuild the body, paint the engine. Service everything on the engine;
-hoses
-t stat
-waterpump
-injectors
-diaphram in the injection pump
-new primer pump
-new filters
-valve set

and maybe more.

Then I would skip the rebuild. And save the extra couple grand and buy a low kM JDM 13b-t engine.

I see no point in rebuilding the 3b unless you really want too. Or keep it around and slowly rebuild it. In the meantime enjoy the 13b-t, direct injected turbocharged engine.

See gandscruiserparts.com for some ideas

Is there alot of modifications needed to swap a 13bt in it? I have a 5 speed? On rebuild kits I noticed diesels have cylinder sleeves so does that mean you dont have to bore out the walls and such? just buy the kit and install? also, is there a anti sway kit or ideas for the lean when turning on these FJ/BJ's? I know the tops are heavy, just didnt know if there was something out there? I had a 76 FJ with just a bikini top and drove nice?

You can ask the sway issue on the 40 section. They will know the answer.

IMOP the idea of the sleeves is it returns it to stock with new pistons and rings.

so the clearances should be close. Just a hone away from stock.

But it's not that simple.

If you do that part, you have to do the head/valvetrain/oil pump/cooler/rebuild the injection pump/nozzles/re do the oil spray nozzles/ check all the front end stuff.

Expect to spend 4k. Or abouts. Do it on the cheapie 3k.

To rebuild it completely it is a lot more than the kit.

SO 4 k for a 3b indriect injected engine or http://www.gscruiserparts.com/engines.html

see the long blocks. Yes your transmission mounts to it. It is a direct replacement. The 13b-t is a 3b with a turbo and direct injection.

So for 2k more or less than a real rebuild you are into a wayy more powerful engine.

If I was rebuilding an engine, I would skip it and buy a 13b-t.

But if I had a 400,000 kms or so engine than ran fine and had good compression I would leave it be. Do the servicing and paint the block to look nice and revel in the fact that these are well built engines designed to go for half a million miles.

but save my pennies for 13b-t. Cause you know a diesel needs a turbo. And your fresh 3b is going to need to be turbo'd too. An AXT turbo runs 3K.... A junkyard DIY 1k.

Soo your almost at the price of a Japan take out low KM 13b-t

Thanks for all the info, I figured I would spend $5k on rebuild. I just read the G&S column on 13BT's in 83 BJ's and it says they would not recomend due to rarety? and that it is not an exact fit and mods would have to be made? your right on the 3B power (slow), will my head fit on one of these? I will shoot them an email, they did not have any answers about 83 BJ42 with P/S as of yet? they also mentioned the flywheel and bellhousing is diff than 3B? I would love the power if it will work I will look into if I dont have o make any permanennt mods like altering frame or such? Compared to my 76 FJ with 2F this thing is a moped as far as speed? I was planning on swapping my 4:11's to 3:70's just for better fuel consumption and highway speeds.

wana trade your 4.11 for my 3.73? i was planning just the oposite. my truck is a lot heavier than yours and my concern is that when i go with 33s it wont have the gusto. i have an atx and yes it is nessasry on a 60 but a na 40 is not so bad.

look were he lives.....shipping would kill the deal. Gotta be some 4;11s in cowtown. Or have your thirds re-geared.
