Howdy Folks;

Anyone rebuild a dynamo from a 3B

My truck is not charging properly - so I will take it off and see about rebuilding - cleaning

anyone know about this procedure?

Cheers thanks ya

My 24 volt alternator had seized up, I brought it to the local alternator rebuild shop (the one that the local toyota dealer uses) and it cost me approximately $120. Rebuild included new brushes and bearings. Got it back the next day, clean and painted.

Howdy 84BJ42:

Thanks for the reply; I wonder if it matter that i am in the continental US and these diesels were not plentyful.

i will run it by a local alternator shop and see if I can get some new brushes for it - but i have another 3B that will have to be rebuilt as I have a very hard brake pedal-

hoping for a diagram ( factory )

cheers thanks

hi,
just make sure it's a nippondenso (ND) repairer. lot's of american vehicles uses ND alternators & starters. the brushes are only $0.25 each (you need 2) and it can be done with the alternator on the vehicle, easy fix! just remove the IC voltage regulator on top of the alternator and pull the assembly out. your brushes should have some length to them and if not, resolder new ones. 20mm(0.787 inch) is the required length and the minimum is 5.5mm(0.217 inch)! make sure you remove the grounds on the batteries before starting.

Cheers thanks ivanhoe:

I was out tonight trying to pull the alternator - got all unplugged and bolts out - yet there must be a trick to getting alternator off - WHAT IS THE TRICK?

so I was looking to see if I could replace brushes with alternator installed

Good things you can - and thanks again for mentioning this

i will of course like to take the alternator out as this truck came from ontario and the previous owner just oil sprayed the undercarriage - so lots of dirt and oil buildup

Enjoy weeks end

peace

My bet is the internal voltage regulator NOT the altenator. I've replaced the voltage regulator probably 2-3 times and the brushes once and I've NEVER done anything else to the altenator.
The regulator is available stateside for about $35. Check the thread on parts interchangeability here in the diesel section.
I need to pick one up to carry as a spare. I'll be getting it stateside too since it's much cheaper!

Howdy cruiserguy:

Really - cheaper in the states - from dealer or?

I have had good luck with metro in Victoria for internet sales - they discount( ed - dunno if they still do ) and shipping was not bad

I can also try Toyota of Dallas - i hear they are good service and resonable on price - If I get a good deal i will pass along the info

Cheers ya

good point ;) on the regulator, they do fry-up from time to time. try a voltage test at different rpm's to diagnose it! it should have a reading approx... 12.5 to 13.8 volts.

howdy Folks:

Right now - as I have no reason to believe the voltmeter ( ampmeter ) gauge in truck is off - was reading about 7-8 if I was lucky - on a long trip it would jump around a bit - go way high then way down to well below 10

So I will check locally for Transpo and brushes- and call Romain first thing monday

Cheers ya

howdy folks:

Since we are on this subject

I now have a 2LT 4x4 pickup without a tach
I have heard of a trick of welding a single wire to a certain place in the alternator to get a pickup signal to send to a diesel tach

Anyone have knowledge of this ...... there was a page from France a few years back - au revoir..... gone now .... mon Dieu... je me demande..... que maintenant pour les pauvres me

Thanks ya cheers
