So I'm helping my brother with a 5-speed conversion on his 62. Never been in one before, so I'm a newbee on this deal. My question is would you rebuild the main drive gear (high/low gear) if it's within spec. The book calls for .15-.30Mm clearance between the two bearings. The front is towards the end. .278 goes in but .305 does not. The rear bearing is well within spec. See pics and let me know your thoughts. This is not a crawler. More of a family toy and hunting rig.

Yes, all new bearings while its apart. No question! You do not want to do it again in 10,000 miles do you?

I hear you guys and would have to agree. From everything I've read this is the most challenging peice inside the case. Everything has gone extremely well so far, so my hope is this will as well

Ok... A few quick questions for those that know this piece. Is this broken tooth a problem? It's on the end of the shaft where the pilot bearing goes. I could have done this taking the snap ring off. Second question...I reuse these half bearings? Did not get new ones in the rebuild kit. Thanks, Jim

Broken tooth doesn't matter now. Wonder where the piece ended up.
Or maybe it's best not to wonder about such things.

I'm pretty sure I did it prying the snap ring off. My plyers r not the best and I had to use the small flat blade to get it off. Thanks for the pic. Really good detail. I have pressed on the new bearings. Still trying to figure out where the races (came with new bearings) go. May figure this out when I put the case together. Since we are converting a FJ62 to a 5 speed, I have to source the long bolts to mate the case to the tranny.

Never mid the point about the races. I found where they go. Did a dry run putting the case together and it's obvious where they go
