Anybody tried it? How does it feel at higher speeds? The thought here being the over drive t-case gears making longer pulls on the highway with the 5.29s/35s more bearable and with the lower low range t-case gears + 5.29s with the 35s turn it into something really special on the trail...thoughts?

Haven't done it but it would be pretty close to what 4.88's and 35's feel like without the overdrive t-case gears. Should be bearable. Personally I would still only do 4.88's. The improvement in low range going from 4.88 to 5.29 would be minimal and I doubt it would be that noticeable especially with the lower t-case gears.

As I do the napkin math I am beginning to think I agree with you. 5.29/overdrive t-case/low range t-case would be slightly lower than 4.88/stock high range/low t-case for final drive, but more expensive and arguably "weaker". The more I think about this, the more 4.88s make sense, as much as I want 5.29s.

5.29's is nice to say, but just isn't worth it IMO now that tcase gears (high and low) are available. I know there are plenty of people running 5.29's but I still prefer the 4.88, especially with 35's, and they're a near perfect match for stock-like feel with 37's (of course that's with stock tcase). Just one guy's opinion but I think you'd be happier in the long run with the 4.88's.

5.29's with overdrive TC case gears would be 4.7's.

Seems like people saying 4.88's are great, should be ok with 4.7's in 4H and then having the lower gears when you shift to low range.

4.88 with 35s is perfecto. when you move to 37s then 5.29 would be good. 4.88 and 35 with tcase reduction have not seen yet. but i think that what im going to do. and maybe go 37s

I searched for a post I thought I'd seen about 5.29 and overdrive being suggested by Georg @orangefj45 as a great idea. I didn't find that post, so he may never have said it. I did find this old thread in the "Hardcore" section. Trail Gear gears? After much back and forth, the money comment to me was:
<snip> ...all things considered its all about the size of that pinion head... BUT, I'd bet in many cases where a 5.29 fails, a 4.88 would also fail and vice versa ;)

We’ve sold 3:1 low range and 10% underdrive gears to customers already or planning on running 5.29’s, a Venezuelan in Florida with 37’s comes to mind. Let me see if I can get some feedback from him.

If you’re interested in seeing the gear charts and how they vary from 4.10, 4.56, 4.88, 5.29, etc...

Feedback would be great! Thanks. I think that final drive ratio would be pretty awesome, but keep waffling between that and 4.88s since I plan to stick to 35s.

On the other, other hand though, just going full max gearing 5.29/underdrive high/l3:1 low on 35s is massively tempting :hmm:

If I had the coins I would got with that exact setup except with 37s....and adding the turbo which I will be doing.

I tried someone’s 80 with 5.29 and 3:1 low range on 35s and wow it is amazing! It literally idled up a big curb with no gas Input at all.

@Bludozer my friend @Jgunner has 4.88 and 37s and I have driven his LC and it feels good with that setup. I am on the fence about doing either 5.29 on 37s and leaving my HD and Low gears stock but after seeing these numbers I am more interested in doing 4.88 with the 10% UD and the 3.1 low gear or leaving the low stock all on 37s.

Thats a good route, not cheap, but route i hope to be doing the same this year.

After wheeling with 3:1 low range I say it’s a must mod especially if you go 37 regardless if your pinion gearing. It is sublime!

See, i hate 1st gear in high in the dirt. I almost always drop in in low and require very little throttle.

I run 5.29's and 37's. My speedometer is off buy about 10 mph at hwy speed and 5 when cruising around town (faster).
I have the 3:1 gear set, but haven't installed yet.
in low w/ stock gears, it's ok...... I just need some time to drop the case and install the PT, and the 3:1.
