33s are they for me?

So i have been trying to decide if 33s would be a good fit for me. I have a stock 2f carbed 84 fj60, I live in wy (lots of hills). This is my DD and it has no lift but only 110000 miles. how much rubber over drive do you achive with 33s compared to power loss for turning them? :hmm: Would they turn the 2f into more of a dog where its not a good DD?

same boat here. actually trying to get new shoes this week and can't decide if i want to stick with 31's or go 33's and AAL to get a bit more lift.

33's without a lift will likely rub. I have a 2 1/2" lift and I ran 33"x12.5"x15" BFG MT's for a while and they rubbed on full articulation. My 32x11.5x15 BFG AT's are fine and I'll be running 34"x10.5"x15" or 34"x9.5"x15" Swampers on stock rims soon for off road only, we'll see how they work out. Both BFG's were on the stock rims. I probably would have been fine with the 33"x12.5" on wider rims which would push the tire out further and away from the inner fender and springs.

In my thread https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/364645-alaska-tire-advice.html there is a pic of my cruiser with stock(flat) springs and 33's page 2. I only had it like that for 2 or 3 weeks before I put the lift on (pg 3 for after pics) but if I had wheeled it then I would have rubbed. As far as rubber over drive cruising on the highway at 65 is much nicer 2500 rpm instead of 3000 at 65. There is one hill that unless I start out a little faster I will be at 60 or 62 at the top. I am dding the cruiser and there is nothing going on that I can't live with. You might try the local club and see if some one has one set up similar you could go for a ride to see what you can live with.

An H41 tranny would make this sort of Ok, as would a regear to 4.11. Uphill starts with an H42 and 33s on stock gearing is not so good.

I drove my 60 with 33s for years with H55f and 4.11 gears, and it was about perfect.

I daily drive 33's with stock gears on my 60. I still have enough get-up to accelerate in Houston traffic. Plus I can go 70 around 2800-3000rpm, I like it the way it is right now. I just want a 5 speed haha

check my thread....2.5 inch lift and run 33x10.50x15 BFG KM2. I think I could run them without lift and only get a little rubbing on rough terrain...plenty of room for the tall skinny tires in wheel well especially with 2.5" BDS lift.

I noticed slight loss of umpff but lowered RPMs for highway driving...so not bad tradeoff. ONly time I really notice is a lot of stop and go traffic the gas mileage takes a hit...due to extra weight of tire.

Never an issue with wandering...wearing good with rotation of all 5 tires every 3-4k miles....great performance.

Always bigger. Always.

Ha! I love it!

I have an FJ62 with 33x1250's. It wanders all over the place with the bigger tires. I have to shim the front end. It is on my to-do list.

I like big tires, though!

I run 33x10.5 on stock/flat springs. Ive articulated her quite a bit and have NEVER had anny rubbing issues. I have very little problems with the get-up-and-go aspect (I can still be out in front of the pack after a red light), but it took a day or two of driving to get used the the stock gearing w/33s.

yea...

I run 38.5's now and want 40's next and then im sure ill want bigger then too...

i ran 33x12.50-15 on my truck in stock form and liked them:meh:

I agree with Cruisin, I've been running 33's w/ 2.5 inch lift for a while and now I want 35's or 37's. I cant afford the SOA though...

I have the same problem with my 33/12.5's

i'm thinking about 33/10.5. the skinny look has grown on me. seems that would take some of the wandering out of the front end as well.

I know this one guy who does it pretty reasonably priced, and you wouldnt have some of the same issues you had with other things. :grinpimp:

the wandering you guys are experiencing is from low caster, the larger tires are making it more prominent and showing up more. if you check yalls alignment (on a rack) you probably have close to 0* caster aybe less if running a longer shackle. these trucks call for 1*+

just something to think about.

I drove my 60 with 33s and stock gearing for years. It wasn't great, that's for sure. Sure, you got lower RPMs at freeway speeds, once you finally got to freeway speeds. And hopefully there won't be a headwind.

The 60 ain't exactly overpowered. The effective higher gear ratio of the larger tires made it too high geared in my opinion. Sure, you can live with it like I did for many years. Or you can deal with it which is what I finally did. 4.11 gears and you are basically back to stock gearing. And like Cruiserdrew said, 33s, 4.11 gears, and a H55f is one great combination (which is what I currently run).

I live in Wyoming and have stock gears and 33's. The 2-low mod helps offroad. I've been back and forth between the rubber overdrive and regearing. The ultimate would be 4:11's and a 5 $peed. On the pavement you will be fine but you won't win any drag races.

I run 33-1050s on my 60 (small lift) with the stock 2F. The rubber overdrive is nice and I don't have any issues with the acceleration or speed. We're not talking about a race car here. On the other hand, my DD is a '79 Mercedes 240d so the cruiser feels like a race car!
