hey guys. Talking about 25 year old vehicles here - I heard that if you're importing from US to Canada you need to give the Canadian border 3 days notice and you have to send them a fax copy of the registration or something?
First off, is this true? But more importantly, does the american border have similar guidelines or can a 25 year old vehicle just show up at the border with bill of sale, registration etc. and get thru?

With the sequester the Customs agents have probably been sent home and the border gate was just left open. After all our Canadian neighbors are all honorary Americans anyway. :D
The U.S. Government will gladly accept a donation as you pass through. ( just put it under the door )

Search this topic in the diesel tech sticky as well, Its been covered a lot there. But to help answer your questions: If your importing from USA to Canada the vehicle only needs to be 15 years old to be RIV except. You will have to present a copy of the vehicles title to the USA border you wish to cross at at least 72 hours in advance. You will stop in at the USA border office first on your way through and get your title stamped for export. Then proceed to the Canadian side with your stamped title and bill of sale where you will fill out a Vehicle Import Form 1. Next simply take your title, bill of sale and copies of the form 1 to your local registry/licencing office to complete the registration process. I have imported two RIV exempt vehicles from the USA to Canada and it really is that simple.

The 15 year age requirement is for grey market vehicles only, coming in to Canada.
For vehicles going to the United States, they must be 25 years old or more.

The riv.ca website has very complete information on how to do this.

I am confused by this comment and if I am missing something please let me know but I do not see where the RIV says the 15 year exemption is for grey market vehicles ONLY? Her is the exact quote copied and pasted from their website:http://www.riv.ca/RIVExemptions.aspx

"Vehicles are exempt from the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) registration if they are imported under one of the following conditions:
1. Vehicles older than 15 years
The vehicles (excluding buses) are 15 years old or more based on the date of manufacture, or are buses (including school buses) manufactured before January 1, 1971. The importer must be able to prove the age of the vehicle."

Yes they do specifically say grey market vehicles must be 15 years old but it does not say anything about the 15 year exemption applying only to grey market vehicles:http://www.riv.ca/VehicleAdmissibility.aspx

"Grey market vehicles
Grey market vehicles are foreign-specification vehicles that are re-certified by a U.S. company. These are vehicles that were originally manufactured for a domestic market other than the United States. They were subsequently imported into the U.S. where they have been modified to comply with U.S. safety and emissions standards.
Grey market vehicles may have a label affixed by the U.S. company that altered the vehicle indicating that the vehicle has been “imported”, “altered”, or “modified” to comply with U.S. standards. Grey market vehicles (excluding buses) less than 15 years old from the date of manufacture and buses (including school buses) manufactured on or after January 1, 1971 are inadmissible for entry into Canada."
 
If a vehicle is a Canadian Domestic Market vehicle or a USA Domestic Market vehicle, it is not subject to the 15 year age restriction.

If a vehicle was from another market it is subject, in Canada, to a 15 years old or older age restriction.

If it is heading to the USA from another market, there is a 25 years old age restriction.

RIV does not get involved with vehicles that are coming from, say, Japan, and are being imported under the 15 year rule. RIV is primarily concerned with vehicles coming from the USA and in to Canada.

The real piece left out by diesel69er is what type of vehicle we are talking about and what market it was originally intended for.

The difference is if its more then 15 years old it is RIV exempt and also not subject to transport Canada's list of admissible vehicles. However the federal restriction says it can not be "substantially modified". It will of course still have to meet provincial regulations.

If its less then 15 years old it will have to go through the RIV program which has added costs and hassles associated with it. Such as obtaining a recall notice from the manufacture, paying RIV registration fee's and going through an RIV inspection after it arrives in Canada, that may reject any modifications done to the vehicle. Also many vehicles less then 15 years old are not on Transport Canada's list of admissable vehicles for various reasons. So check before you buy!!

thnx for the input guys. i didn't word the question very well. I was wondering more about going from Canada into the U.S. Is it similar to our rules? (other than the fact that the vehicle must be 25 yrs. old instead of 15) The truck would be an 87' BJ70.

I had ZERO problems bringing my 1985 BJ70 from BC to Washington a couple of years ago. I filled out some of the paperwork beforehand and it took longer to go through the line at the border crossing than it did to get the paperwork stamped inside. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Two months ago I imported a BJ74 from Alberta to Montana. Do your homework, show up at customs with the necessary paperwork, and be on your way. No advanced notice needed, although I called about a week ahead to make sure I wasn't forgetting anything.
