Has anyone thought of/done this swap?

Not that the 5vzwhatever the hell is a better motor, but the hp and torque numbers aren't that far off and the T100 only weighs 700 pounds less than the 80. A well tuned and slightly built 3.4 could put out the same numbers as the 1fz-fe and get 20+ mpg on the freeway.

Probly not worth the time and money, but leaving the 5 speed mated up to it would be cool too.....

Just a thought.

Well, you'd also need to have the transfer case from the truck, and figure out how to bring across a lot of the other electronics, etc.

from the title it sounded like you were going to deactivate a couple of cyls...

we could try that.... :D

I got 13-14mpg in my stock 96 T100 extracb 4wd, same as my LC, so not worth time/money IMHO. Stock, you are also giving up 22hp and 55ft-lb, that lesser power is also sevral hundred rpms higher than the inline 6.

I get 15-16 around town, but I only drive 2 miles back and forth to work. On the highway is where the major difference lies.

I have a 95 T100 4x4 ext cab and I must say the little V6 is a dawg and only gets about 2 miles per gal beter than my cruiser.

On the hyw the 3.4 has to drop out of over drive and rev hard just to keep up on slight inclines. The 1fze feels like it has twice the tourqe in the 700 lb heavier cruiser.

The V6 is a bit underpowered, but mated to the 5 speed it will walk all over an 80 (I've done it:)

If yer easy on the throttle you can push 18 in town, whereas 18 is the best you will ever see in an 80. I never claimed that this was an ideal engine swap, just that it might be able to save on gas.

On that note, what about the 245 hp v6 in the new tacomas....That would probly be a lot more complicated, but could work out allright if one had the time and the parts....

The stock engine is built like a tractor engine. I'd be much more likely to drop the 4.5 in a T100.

So you could get a drive train from an FJ Cruiser with the 6 speed and play with that... Or, if you want power AND mileage go to an 1HD-T turbodeisel, which would be an easier swap in an 80, and should get around 20 MPG - maybe more.

When I dream at night, the turbodiesel option keeps talikng to me.

or you could just attach the 5-Speed that came with the 4.5L in foreign markets. Less work than even the diesel swap (although diesel is the best way to go)

i wouldnt swap unless i was putting in a diesel.

I think you would need the whole drive train... 1HD-T, manual tranny, and Tcase. Not certain about this, but the 80 is set up for FT 4WD, and a part time case might not work or even be available for that combination. But I don't know.

I believe that the 1HD-T is a near bolt-up on the FZJ80 automatic trannies.
