Here's that piston I was tellin' you about, Wayne:

Not quite as spectacular as the 1HD-T crank (man that sucks)... I especially like how the No.1 ring is fused to the piston:) The head is indeed cracked between valves, however; it is fairly deep, about 4mm above the valve seat. The shop says it may be repairable by "pinning". Still waiting to hear about the block...hurry up and wait:)

i will get this head magna fluxed and let you know how it turns out.
man, that is one ugly piston...

I've seen the block and the heads melted but never the piston on a 2L-T. Might want to have the injectors tested and the injection pump because pistons usually get melted from a lean condition. That cylinder was most likely running too lean causing hot spots and melting the piston.

I'm quite certain this is a mechanical failure.
a. the head is cracked on that cylinder, and evidence of water in chamber.
b. the pre-ignition chamber was dropped and also in similar condition.
no matter, this is a project engine to put in my '82 pickup to replace the stock 1L (gutless wonder) engine. ie total rebuild including injectors etc....

That's the sort of damage I've seen in Cummins diesels that have been run at high EGTs. It's usually #6 that goes first on those.

I had to take my wife's TDI in for emissions today and forgot my camera again. They have a carnage bench that's fun to look at. enjoy. Sorry it's kinda blury I used the phone camera. Pistons, turbo's, propellers, valves, etc.

I saw a similar situation on a Nissan Patrol diesel in Honduras a year or so ago. The belief was excessive heat melted the piston.
