There are 2 styles of 2L series engines : the early ones with the offset cam and rockers up till 1989 and the late style with the direct valve activation from 90 on. The electronic only came on the later stule.
Most of the time the later ones are refered to as 2L2 or 2LT2 or 2LTE.
The early style have a cast aluminim top cover with 3 big nuts in the middle, and a round section pipe crossover tube and a timing cover which uppermost part offsets to the right hand side of the truck (left when you look at it from the front), the later style has a stamped steel cover which is attached with 10 or 12 peripherial bolts, with a stamped steel, square section box crossover pipe and a more symetric timing cover.
