Excuse me for being a noob on smoker swaps. FJ62 and motor both with mechanic.

Here it is in a nutshell:

*2H was mated to a manual, flywheel, clutch and bellhousing, 24v set up.

*FJ62 is built/wired to US specs of course...dead engine due to poor 2FE mod...factory 4 speed auto

*Being told he needs a different flywheel/flexplate and torque convertor to mate into the 62 4speed automatic.

*No plans to turbo, 400 compression across the board on the 2H.

*He is going to switch to 12v and 2 batteries

Questions:

1. Conversion kit for mating 2H flex/torque convertor to the gaser 4 speed automatic in the 62? Where and how?

2. Will this setup run correctly? ( I know it will be slow)

3. Ease/cost/pros/cons to just go with a manual H55? If I do can I use the flywheel, clutch, bellhousing, etc?

4. What are the current parts (flywheel, clutch, bellhousing)for 2H worth?

If anybody knows a specialist/mechanic in the Asheville, NC area familiar with doing this type stuff you can email me at: sophiessmiles@yahoo.com or call me at 828-three two nine, 3946...Thanks!

Here's my limited knowledge:

1) The 3FE auto has a different configuration than the 2H. You will need the shift points adjusted (different valve body) and a different torque converter. This is expensive. You can get the parts from rodney in australia or from an A440F from a diesel. I do NOT know HOW different the autos really are.
Also, the injection pump on the 2H manual is not the same as on the 2H auto and the A/C stuff as well as the power steering pump have different attachments (for the idle up features on the auto).

2) assuming you do it right, the setup will run fine (and slow, as you already know).

3) The H55F will run you 2200 new. I'd put a new clutch/throwout bearing/main bearing/rear main seal on and machine the flywheel when you are in there (~$400). You'll need a pedal assembly and bucket (not too expensive used).
This is probably still cheaper than the auto changeover, and not hard. Also, it will get you a lot more power to the wheels.

4) close to nothing.

FWIW:

A diesel wheels a lot like an automatic, but without the slushy part of the transmission. I don't think I have ever stalled mine wheeling. The torque band of a diesel motor is a beautiful thing! Add to that the efficiency benefits of the manual transmission on the highway, and I personally wouldn't consider using the auto, since you've got all the stuff to that already bolted to the 2H. Sounds easier than sourcing the flex plate and stuff to mate the 2H to an automatic.

You can always turbo it later if you want (I would, but that's because I would equate turbo to diesel, as key is to lock).

Converting the engine to use 12V is definitely the way to go. Really, you need to swap the starter (or put a 12V motor on your 24V case), get the alternator that puts out 12V, put in Glow Plugs for a 12V system, and deal with the EDIC, if you have one at all.

MUCH easier than converting your truck to 24V, IMHO.

Good stuff guys, ton of help.

Quick question, will a 4 speed manual from a FJ60 connect as easy as H55 5 speed? I have one laying around left over from a donor. Thanks in advance.

Thinking of having the 4 speed thrown in while I hunt a H55 or H55 donor rig.

Ok...found a 4 speed manual out of an 84HJ60 with transfer case delivered from Canada for $950...do those drive like the gaser 4 speed manuals? Help! lol

Yes, should work fine. also a 4 speed from a gasser will be fine. 950 seems steep-get one from a 60 that is being parted out and you are golden. try a post 85, then the H55F will be a straight bolt in afterwards. Also get the drive shafts, if the original 2H came from a pre 85 truck. The reason is that the 4 speed got a spacer in the later years that made it the exact same length as the 5 speed.

let me know if that was gibberish.

Great info...parts cost of 4 speed in gas and diesel same? Same thing? Pros/cons of both as we'll as true savings vs h55.....Want easy of switch to. Would look at all options...thanks again bro

Yes, same as far as I know.
The H55F is far superior though, as it gives you a higher 5th and a lower 1st.
H55F:
1st: 4.84:1
5th: 0.85:1

H42:
1st: 3.55:1
4th: 1:1

The input shaft between 3FE, 2h and 2F is the same, so all trannies work in all combinations.

For ease at lowest cost I'd get a H42 with transfer from a post 85 60 series, the driveshaft, pedal assembly, pedal bucket, clutch master/slave assembly and lines. This should pretty much bolt into the 62.

Contact george at valley hybrids or search for his threads (orange45 on mud, or so). He converted a 62 to manual not too long ago and documented it very well here.

J

Awesome...The BJ70 I just sold had the H55 and while it was better on the highway, ITS STILL SLOW!!! lol Not gonna be doing any major wheeling where the H55 1st gear is nice...I'll make it work for now, and I happen to have a spare from a 87' FJ60...Was looking forward to the automatic as just a runner, but it tis what it tis and I don't mind driving it as a 4speed for now until I figure it out, I just want to drive it...lol

Again, thanks for all the help, now I get to be sure I'm doing 12v or 24v...oh well, it will all be worth it once its done.

Not counting 5th gear, the H42 has ratios that make it better on the road. As you know from your BJ70 the H55 is not the smoothest tranny on the road. If you are not going to wheel it alot you will like the 4speed just fine as long as the gears and tires are matched to the 2H.

Ive owned 60's, just curious if it will be slower than a 60, guessing so..I think the h55 seems waaaay overpriced and hard to get...plus, with the h55 diesel setup, i was in 3rd going up hills anyways...lol

What changes would setting up to the 2H make?

Thanks, good stuff...ready to pull trigger on something!

I'd be a little leery about a 4 speed coming from a 1984 2H truck, certainly not Canadian spec. As far as I know, Canada only got HJ60's in 1986-87, prior to that was the BJ60, which is a 3B truck. We had BJ70's, but again, AFAIK, they only came with 3B's.

Great info ,,
I have an HJ60 with auto and would rather a manual.
I don't know how close that 2H to mine being from a 5dp.
But the rad for mine was like $800 new and I ended up using a rad from a 62 while keeping the air and the oil cooler.
It was easy to modify the tensioner and turn the thermostat housing to point the opposite way , something you might want to consider if your 62 rad is in good shape.
Good luck

i had my 62 rad mod'd(for $90) to 'fit' my 2h.

as for the transmission(s)
cost wise:

swaping in a manual most like will mean needing 2 new driveshafts.
so if you are going that far, go for a 5speed.

or keep the auto and it will bolt up to stock location and no need for new driveshafts.

and x2 if you buy a 4 or 5speed from canada make sure its from a F or H motor or it wont fit

heres my write-up https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/274227-fj62-hj60-hj62-diesel-swap.html

There are substantial differences between a 2H auto and 2H 5 speed. The 2H auto uses a VSV for stopping the motor restricting the air intake, a 5 speed uses an EDIC motor that stops the fuel. These ancillary items would all need to swapped, not a thrilling prospect when you see the two side by side. I had a perfectly good 5 speed motor and a dead 2H auto motor, it was easier to buy a good used auto motor than to swap all the ancillary items.

AFAIK the driveshafts between a A440F and H55F HJ60 are the same, the transfercase is in the same position on the car.

Not so, the bellhousing is in the same position, an A440/ t-case is much longer than an H55/ t-case.

...
Also, the injection pump on the 2H manual is not the same as on the 2H auto ...

cheers,
J

Is it still possible to run a manual transmission on a 2H auto engine?

From what I gather, the manual IP has a vacuum hose that assists the clutch. Just wondering if it were possible to still run it, without that vacuum mechanism?

(I'm thinking of converting my 2H auto to a manual)

Yes it is possible to run a 2H auto with the manual gearbox, I just rigged up a switch that closes the shut off flap and added an extra spring to the IP. No issues.. The vacuum for the clutch is from the alternator not the IP.
