I've currently got an A440f and it's really not a bad tranny (for an automatic :D) in the 2H. At 2500 RPM in 4th I'm at about 72MPH (116KPH). I'm running stock tires/suspension.

I'm almost ready to start a frame swap and am contemplating switching from the A440f to an H55f (auto to manual) at the same time. Anyone with the 2H/H55F combo have any RPM numbers for highway speeds? Or how fast are you going at 2500 RPM in 5th?

about 100 KPH. for me it turns too high with 4.11 gears, and I am swapping in 3.73s.

cheers,

With 31" tires (but 1/2 worn out) I get similar numbers to your 4 speed. I was running from Seattle to Vancouver yesterday and played a bit with Speed and Rpm. From memory, 100 kph was about 2100 rpm and 120kph was around 2700 - I'll be on the highway tonight and I'll check and repost. I also only got about 18 mpg - maybe I should lean more towards the 100kmph than the 120:D :D

My HJ60 with H55F, 4.11s, and 33" tires does about 65-70mph/105-110kph at 2500. Maybe a hair less. I don't normally cruise at this RPM, though the motor is very quiet at 2500 with wide open throttle.

Checking again
2200 RPM 100Km/h
2500 RPM 110Km/h
2700 RPM 120Km/h

1500RPM 70Km/h

All speeds in 5th gear

Stock axles and 1/2 worn 31" tires

Hope this helps

I think the final drive in A440 and H55f are the same or very close.

Try these online calculators to test your speedo and tacho.

Thanks, guys.

So it sounds like going from an A440f to an H55f is really more about the lower first gear than the benefit of an overdrive. I prefer MT's, and it's definitely the route I'll go when the automatic eventually goes, but I think I'll let it die with dignity after all.

Here are those gear ratios:

Yeah, I didn't realize 4th gear was that long on the A440f either. Now I want a MT with a low first gear and a 0.717 top gear....time to start looking for a 6-speed. ;)

"I never know those numbers for A440 are great in 4th .. .717 sound great !"

That explains a lot. my wife has the A440 and I almost thought it had an overdrive gear as it seems to 'double shift' from 3rd to 4th. Also, it is an absolute dog in 4th on hills.

Yeah, I only race people downhill with my A440. I just pretend I'm sight-seeing when I'm going up.
:cool:

Wow....I've Google'd for the past hour, and finally found this chart for gear ratios on the major transmissions.

I'm in the process of retrofitting a H55F/Marlin Toybox/Split case into a 91 FJ80 with the 3FE motor.

I was wondering what the Overdrive difference would be....and this summed it up!

Wonder why I couldn't find it on the 'Mud search engine before - but TTT with this thread - has some good gear info!

hj47 with 2h and h55 from sor

it was interesting to see the ratio's posted- just put in a 5 speed from sor and im running 33's and was cruising nicely around 70mph @ 2500+/- rpm hit 75 around 2850 +/- for what its worth- im feeling very comfortable with the speed at 70- the engine felt good- at the 2500 rpm- Did have a guy mention to put in a pyrometer to measure my exhaust- but not sure what thats about- (obviously im a slow learner)

i am looking to do a cross country run and will most likely run around 70mph- have you heard any pro's or cons with running at the speed and rpm on an older 2h?

btw- good luck with your frame off- mines comming this winter-

I had the same combo on Patches with 33" tires and a turbo 2H and it was OK. However, when I put 3:73 gears in she was fantastic! I used to drive from Santa Fe to Boulder regularly and it cruised very nicely at 75 at about 2400 with the 3:73s. I have a Vortec in there now (no more need to pretend I'm looking at scenery on the way up Vail Pass - I pass people going up Vail Pass no:grinpimp:) and I'd like to get the RPMs down even lower.

The added benefit of 3:73s is that it makes the 1st gear on the H55/H41 more usable.

Cheers,

Josh

Maybe the "Double Shift" that you are experiencing is when the AT shifts into 4th, and then the torque convertor locks up? If it is not kicking down to 3rd on hills it may be time to get the kickdown point adjusted?
Thanks, guys.

So it sounds like going from an A440f to an H55f is really more about the lower first gear than the benefit of an overdrive.
The 1st gear on the A440F may look taller if you are only looking at the ratios on paper, but in the REAL world, the torque convertor hydraulically makes that a LOT lower than the gear ratio would suggest - it would be a shame if someone changed from an AT to a MT just to get a lower 1st gear and then found out that they had taken a step in the wrong direction.
BTW, does anyone have the total length from front pulley to the rear flange on the t-case for a 12ht/a440f combo?

Funny thing, I just reread my post from 5 years ago prior to reading your response and that is exactly what I said to myself about the torque converter thing. :) no problem with the downshifting, in fact, in the hills I just put it in third and run it at 3000 rpm.

Wow, this thread again.

HJ60 A440F, 31" tyres, 4.11 gears.

50kph = 1000rpm
70kph = 1300rpm
90kph = 1750rpm
100kph = 1950rpm

I never go over 100kph, so I have no idea about that.

Edit:
I drove 110 kph today.

110kph = 2200rpm

i have often thought what a second O/D would be like on a H55F.
i have access to a rare, funky split case O/D unit that will bolt on behind the H55F, for highway cruising on the flat with no head wind it might be great but i suspect it would be used rarely.
