That is the galley plug lamb mentioned... Better safe than sorry to remove and replace it. Search this forum for 'stories'.
Looking good!

yes, drill it out, thread the hole and screw in a threaded plug with sealant applied to the threads. you'll never need to drain it from there, but if that plug falls out, then you'll lose all oil before you know better and ruin the motor. most guys who read about this do it while still on the engine with proper care taken not to contaminate the galley with chips- some guys with engine still in truck. no excuse to not do it with everything apart. they have been known to pop out post rebuild- something about the hot tank and type of material of the plug. couldn't cost much to have done- it's about free to do it yourself.

Have sent out to get a threaded plug.

I'm glad I did it. Thanks for your help.

I have arranged my painting area.

Just need to cover from the top so no bits off tree get embedded into the block.

Was planning on spraying today but something came up. Guess I'll have to do it tomorrow in the morning between school runs.

And final coat after lunch.

Got the Galley plug the correct length.

So hopefully that holds and doesn't fail due to my workmanship.

Managed to get the paint area finished with lines across to hang the small things for painting.

So that's it for now.

Will unwrap everything tomorrow when it's dry.

Will clean all threaded holes and go collect all the remaining parts and tools to carry out the next stage.

The rebuild continues. Still plan on finishing before the end of the month.

Stay tuned.

Got most of the tape off the painted parts.

About 4 areas need touching up. But happy in general with the finish. Will let it bake in the sun for a complete day before i start assembly.

Wanted to do the unmasking tomorrow but couldn't hold myself back.

So will touch up paint tomorrow and get some last minute ready done.

Later

So left the parts bake in the sun the whole day. Moving them around to bake all the sides.

Peeled any flakes that didn't attach to the metal, cleaned , sanded and touched up with a brush. Seems to have worked.

So that's paint over thank god.

Will prep all the threaded holes tonight and get ready for assembly.

Got busy today doing nothing.

Hopefully will get started tomorrow as the weekend will give us the free time to close the engine up. I hope.

I haven't read through the whole thread recently, but if you haven't already, get the rotating assembly balanced while you are at it. I'm just getting my 2FE running right now, and holy crap the difference. Spins 4,600 like it's nothing!

You obviously have not read the whole thread. ; )

If you had you would know that I probably don't know what the rotating assembly is let alone balanced.

If you mean get the machine shop to make sure to align the the new bearing, crank and cam shaft. Yes all done.

Will still need to make sure it's within the suggested tolerances once we put her back together.

If that is so then I have learnt what a rotating assembly is.

If not please teach me.

Thanks again.

Here's a good article explaining the process. Basically, you are making sure things that spin (crank, rod, piston) all match in weight and the crank is balanced along it's length. If you have already started assembly, it may be too late unless you want to backtrack. It cost me about $200 extra IIRC, at the machine shop, and I think it's the best money I've ever spent on my 40.

Also, MAKE SURE you have the right freeze plug (i.e. toyota sourced only) in the back of the block behind the cam. One that is too deep won't allow the cam to sit far enough in the block and will kill lifters in a hurry as well as the cam itself.

Thanks man.
I'll go through the thread.

Have not started assembly yet.

Been collecting all the missing tools and parts today. Still some lifters arriving on Saturday from toyota.

Just visited every shop down a street in the old town looking for the plastigage and managed to find some after being told by a few people that I would not find any in this town.

Bloody scored some. I'm sure it's easier to get drugs than the plastigage : )

Does it have a use by date. Coz these boxes look like their from the last century.
