Thats what I'm going to do, ask them if they can/will do the install, and for how much. And according to the ARB dealer who works at the dealership, there are 'Land Cruiser specialists' there. :hmm:. If they for some reason dont/wont do it, i think I know of an old mechanic, who is the only one in the shop(coupled with a BP gas station) who could probably do it.

someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe the 81-84 4spd is shorter in length than a 85-87. otherwise the same

i font think that the transmission is a different length, but i think that its the spacer thats different. it just makes the h55f a direct bolt on for the 85 up 60s

Whoever replaces the trans will also be rebuilding the TCase since it must disassembled to pull the old trans... this will boost the labor cost a bit.

I was in your shoes about 2 years ago and it is no fun... Good luck!

Carl - 2 4sp options. someone will correct if i'm wrong. H42 (US) and H41 (non-us) - 41 has lower first gear for offroad.

H42 can be found from those of us that have swapped to 5sp for little $.

Also - check out cruiserparts.net they have some 4sp's, 5sp's, and autos, and conversion kits for a 62!

I like cruiserparts, but i got my 5sp for a lot less - FYI.

Correct.

got those backwards. H41 US, H42 Non-US (lower gearing).

Wrong. H42 = US
H41 = Non-US ( lower gearing )

Early H42 is shorter until ~5/85 when they added the spacer, making it just as long as the H55.

Quesiton Rob, right above the blue box about the H55, is that the 4spd? If so which on is better? ( if there's a difference) 81-84 OR 85-87?
That would save some $$$ right there, but then theres the cost of labor, and finding a shop that could do it. Dare I say dealership?

Carl the answer is:

H55--- 5 speed manual transmission/ non US
H42--- 4 speed manual transmission/ US version
H41--- 4 speed manual transmission with lowers gears/ non US

If you labor is considered free then a manual swap maybe a "cheaper" option than a new transmission. But either way if you do the work than you will save the most money.

Take a day, chill, drink a  and then make a decision.

Carl - it's a few up. there are two year ranges. The earlier is shorter, and the latter is longer (w/ spacer) so same dimensions as 5 sp. I am not sure about the Auto vs 4sp/5sp for fitment. You may need driveshaft work done. It's no biggie - i got mine shortened/lengthened to fit 5sp on my 84. about 200 all together for DS's here in $eattle area.

I wouldn't trust a dealership with a swap. replacement w/ auto from your other truck - maybe. but not a swap.

I see you are looking for a recommended mechanic. You might also check with a local LC club if you can find one for their recommended guy/place.

if all else fails - look for the oldest shops you can find (think non-electronics & carb guys) and call around.

Good luck!

Haha, no problem.

As for the H55 length vs slushbox length, I think the A440 is longer so the drive shaft lengths would have to change.
