Hey guys,
I've decided to go with Duratracs in 33 inch. I notice they come in both a 285 and a 305 width (identical diameter). I see a lot of talk here about 285mm when it comes to 33s but not much mention of the 305s. What's the scoop? Is skinny better? The 305s are actually cheaper.

Ben

Skinny has less roll resistance. Unless you're driving in a lot of soft sand or mud, a wider tire isn't needed.

what brotherrob said x2.

However I would add that a wider tire is not necessarily better in mud as a narrower tire will cut through the muck and down to the hard stuff more effectively. than a floaty wide tire. Most MT tires are not available in super wide widths and are often the only tires in a manufacturers product line available in super narrow aka pizza cutter sizes.

The 305/70 Duratrac weighs 9lbs more than the 285/75 Duratrac (63lb vs 54lb according to Tirerack). Unless you are super into the wider stance look of the 305/70, that alone should be reason enough to go with the 285/75.

I asked myself this same question today.

I'm also going to be running Duratracs (wish they made them in 255), and decided on the 285's because of the lower weight and lesser roll resistance.

Amen - it would be great if Goodyear had produced the 255/85 flavor for the Duratrac. Oh well. Goodyear has abandoned that size, they don't even make the MTR in 255/85.
