Ok guys, I believe I have narrowed it down. I found a aftermarket wheel I like. It is 20x9 with a +12 offset.

I am not planning to re-gear. Doing the math, it appears I can easily get away with a 285/60r20 (33.5” tire) but am exploring the possibility of a 305/55r20.

I’d rather go with the 305 but my feeling is that it will not clear the fenders and or may need more than the simple plastic fender liner/mudflap mod up front.
Any thoughts?

You don't want +12 offset. That's not going to make fitment easier as it will cause the tire to swing in a wide arc. It's also not great from a suspension geometry POV and will invite odd handling behavior. Best to stay in the +25 to +50mm range, but this also does depend on overall tire diameter.

If there's a case for wider tires - better cornering traction, braking, keeps terrain off the wheel, stays on the wheel better when aired down, and may have softer ride characteristics.

Thanks for your input on this thread. It has been very helpful. Having said that, I am just not that concerned about running +12 offset. That is a mildly aggressive offset. I have tinkered with cars for well over 25 years now... Running a +12 is not something I will lose sleep over. I am concerned about stuffing the biggest size tire on that wheel given the current setup. I am looking for more meat on that 20 and a 305 would start getting close In sidewall height to what I would get on a 18.

No problem. Just friendly help. You might be able to get away with +12 with 275s (which would still require cutting when it wouldn't be necessary otherwise), but that's not going to happen with 305s. For your reference, stock offset on the 200-series is a pretty high +60.

+12 offset if going to require significant cutting of the step and liner, and giving up the mud flap. May also require a body mount chop, which shouldn't be necessary until 35s. May also contact the fender when stuffing tire.

I've run 305/55R20s for awhile. Running 35x12.5s now. This is 305/55R20 +35 if it gives you a point of reference.
