Saw a couple days ago a posting (with diagrams) of a set-up using a hella 24v relay for the switchable power source..........thought I saved it....but cant find....anyone see it?

Hella 24V 10/20A relay part number = 87426.

Pin 86 = connect to +24V lead that is hot when the ignition is in ACC.
Pin 85 = connect to chassis ground.
Pin 30 = is the supply pin. Supply with +12V (constant) from your 24-12V step down converter.
Pin 87 = is switched power. Will have +12V when the relay is activated by ACC ignition position. Connect your stereo IGN lead to this pin. If you want ignition switched +12V for your cigarette lighter, you can also replace the (+) lead at the back center of your cigarette lighter and hook a lead up to this pin.
Pin 87a = leave this pin empty. Make sure that it does not short out to anything as it will have +12V when the relay is OFF.

*Remember to have a fuse somewhere inline to the wire supplying Pin 30 with power.

is there a differance in these relays?

Take your pick, they will all do the same thing. The most obvious difference between the different relays is the housing...some with bracketry and some without. Some are weatherproof (requiring a matching weatherproof base = $$$) and some are not.

Some of those relays have diodes inline to the coil to prevent current from backflowing through the coil. Obviously, proper connection of (+) and (-) to pins 85 and 86 is crucial for these types of relays to function.

The majority of those relays have resistors parallel to the coil. Literature seems to indicate that resistors on the coil have the desirable effect of minimizing voltage spikes when the coil goes on and off. Voltage can flow through these coils either way, so the way you hook up pins 85 and 86 doesn't matter so much.

There's a reason why I quoted relay 87426...it's the relay the I use the most frequently and I was hoping to avoid all of this typing. ;)

Good luck.
