235/85's have about a 9.5" section width...that is not going to work on the stock 16x8 rims. Now a 255/85 is a different story and is a 33" tall tire with about a 10.5" section width. I would go with a 255/85 unless you were switching to some 16x7's. 265/75-16's are a 16" tire version of a 31x10.50 and will fit as well. But again: 235/85 is better suited on a 16x7 rim not the stock 16x8's.

That looks dangerous! What's the benfit of running 235/85/16s besides looking like a low rider?

Not a fan of the 235/85 look from what I'm seeing in that pic...if you are just driving on the road at normal tire pressure then sure. But if you are going for ground clearance while staying skinny as well as a tire you can take off road with out having to worry about rim damage or losing bead if you aired down, then a 235/85 on a 16x8 is not the answer. 255/85's will fit stock, look good, maximize ground clearance, and work great on and offroad. 265/75's are also 31.7" tall in the duratrac you want but are over an inch wider and would work out better as well. No 255/85 in the duratrac though.

Point taken, but if you don't care about looks then why did you buy an 80 series? I mean a 235/85 will fit on a stock tacoma! The wheel wells we have are absolutely unbelievable, but you're gonna put a 31.7x9.50 tire underneath in the name of functionality...these vehicles beg for so much more man! But if I lived in the Rockies I might run a tire in the 31-32" diameter because of the altitude if I didn't want to regear, but I live on island were I can't go over 45mph so I guess I have a different view point.

My next set of trail tires will be 12.4-16 bridgestone Farm Service Lug-F Tractor tires (37.6x12.4) so I guess we use our vehicles for different things. My DD tires are 305/70R16's. When I get back to the states I think I'm going with 37x12.50 Trxus MT's.

I think the 235/85 is a great size, for some applications, I used them on my cummins and could get up to 23 mpg, these tires lend themselves well to fuel economy in a cruiser. I wouldn't call them a lowrider tire since they are actually .5" taller than stock. A wider tire does look better on an 80 though. With the 235/85 you have the potential to air up to 80 psi in a load range E if hypermiling is your thing, air it up for less rolling resistance. If you want to see a 1fz break 20 mpg this is the tire to do it with. And the skinnies do real well in certain snow/ice conditions. Yes a 16x7 rim would be a better fit, but for the driving you have planned it sounds like you would be okay. That being said my next planned tire is the 255/85.

Anyone with something close to this size on there 80? Seem like everyone has 275-315 and I don't want to be that wide. I'm looking at.

Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac
I run 235/85/16 MTs on Tundra 16x7 rims, and love them.

We just had our first major storm of the season, and have well over 2' of snow on the ground. These tires cut through it better than anything else I've owned.

I bought mine from TreadWright for about $85 a piece.

This is a pic about an hour into the storm, just to show the size relation.
