I need to replace the 20hp Onan engine in one of my lawn mowers. The armature mounted inside the flyhweel broke.
Needs a flywheel = $800.00 and NLA.

A couple of Kits are avaliable to install a modern engine. One kit is for a 23hp B&S Vanguard engine and the other kit is for a 24hp Honda engine. The prices are very competitive. The features and benefits are pretty much the same. (B&S bought the Vanguard engine design from Honda in the 80's.)

Which one would you throw $2,000 at?

Honda.

I've never had any trouble with either of the engines you mention, but the Honda engine was just so smooth and never offered so much as a hiccup in performance.

I say B&S..and another American can keep his job...

But then again..I think the Vanguard engines are made in Japan...

Vanguard Single Cylinder Engines
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Alliance
Nagoya, Japan

Vanguard Twin Cylinder Engines
Daihatsu Briggs & Stratton Joint Venture
Ryuo-cho, Japan

Vanguard 3 Cylinder Engines
Briggs & Stratton Daihatsu LLC
Ryuo-cho, Japan

honda, without hesitation.

True, if honda made a 35, I'd probably have one. I love my little honda generator.

Since I respect your opinions I just ordered the Honda kit.

My wife laughed her azz off when I asked if they give a discount to TLCA members and them I had to explain what that was. The customer service representative went and asked her boss. She came back on the phone laughing and said no.

My wife, with tears in her eyes from laughing, said I was mean.

LOL

In California you can buy honda parts at some 7/11's. There are more Honda dealers who stock parts than there are B&S dealers who stock parts. I had a 24hp B&S Vanguard on my chipper. The coil went out, under waranty, and it took a two months to get a new one. It had to be shipped in from Japan.

Most commercial mowers out here on the left coast run Hondas or Kawaski's. Some of the big boys run the 31hp or the 35hp gas or deisel liquid cooled Dhiatsu/Briggs & Stratton Engine.

I have a $3500 Honda generator, Honda mower, and Honda Civic. Hondas tend to start on the first attempt. The Vanguard is a good product, but my money is on Honda and I haven't been let down yet....

I say buy whatever is of higher quality/ better value, and let the competitive market do what it's supposed to do.

Can't go wrong with a Honda.

I ordered my 20 HP Kawasaki engine from www.smallenginewarehouse.com in Indiana. Best price I could find and had free shipping. Got it less than a week after I ordered, was an easy chengeout, and worked great.

I think they sell Honda and Briggs, too.
