Ok fellas... so if my Prado follows suit and the head eventually bites it- heres what I am thinking... find a 22RE engine and as wayne says 'bolt it on...':hhmm:
Now, here in lies the problem. I am not sure if there is any chance of me just going ahead and bolting this thing in!
So, I have a couple of questions:
-Whats a good condition 22RE engine worth
-Whats the deal with the 'long' version of this engine and which one would I need?
-Will this work with an auto transmission, if not can I switch to a standard?
-Does anyone with a shop know how much a swap like this would cost? (This way I can budget for that instead of another head+install)

The deal is I dont think I would ever be interested in parting with the Prado, love the look, the ride, the seating, the size everything is perfect, but the head does worry me a bit and if the solution is just drop in a 22RE when the time comes- thats cool by me, and hey- if my head keeps holding strong, all the better!!

Thanks guys!

you could probably get a used motor for pretty cheap, but i've seen a lot of head issues on these engines not that it's an ISSUE..... I think it's just from people holding there trucks matted for hours on a highway or up hills. I personally can see why 3b's get cracked pre cups due to the fact with a pyro just driving with traffic sometimes EGT's can get rediculously high... I really enjoyed the power of a 22re...

that's a remaned shortblock
4Wheel Auto Wholesale

you could find a used one pretty cheap though I think....
a friend of mind picked up a decent 4 runner with a 22re (warped head) for 750 cdn....

buy a rusty 4runner with a strong running 22re in it. Then you have all the wiring with the computer too.

I think they came in automatic too with the 4cyl. But the auto might have been more common with the v6.

The 22re can make a bunch of power when tuned. A friend of mine has optimized his 22re many times over. Headers/ignition/timing chain replaced/over sized throttle body.......efi dialing in to . There is whole sites geared towards these engines. They are also decent on fuel.

A few aussie owners have dropped V8 Lexus and V6 GM engines into their light duty 70 series

chev 350:
blasphemy...
oh well, replacing crap with crap isn't really blasphemy...

LOL... hey it wouldnt be the first landcruiser I've seen with a 350 in it, thats for sure...
maybe be better to stick with the 22RE though!
You can always count on a solid opinion one way or another from you Wayne!
Hey- do you have any idea (off the top of your head - i wont hold you to it...) how much you would charge to do an engine swap. (or a an approx $$ range?)

Cheers,
T

where are you located?
which engine do you want?
how much do you like your truck?

it comes down to how clean a job you want, which engine and tranny...

seriously, i would stick with a 22R or RE into it. they are cheap to source, parts are going to be around for a good while yet, the power is about the same as well as the fuel economy.

the diesel engine, tranny and t/case is a killer, then exhaust, rad, etc etc costs... i charge $60/hr for labour.

it is the hidden costs that kills... slapping an engine in is the easy part...

talk to Josies land cruiser here on mud, he just finished helping a friend to put a 22R into a LJ73

Hey Wayne, thanks!
I am in Calgary - (sucks you left!), I love the prado and will do all I can to keep it for its size looks etc. I would rather the 22RE for sure, (4 cyl. auto if possible for the gas $$)
Of course, everything is is good with my engine right now so all of this is for the 'when'. (make sure I have that $$ ready, right now I am just planning for a head when the time comes.)

Thanks again!

Hi All:

Yep, Wayne blew my cover! ;)

My friend John (aka "Orangecrate") had the 2L-TE in his LHD LJ73 start blowing oil on I-84 in Idaho on the way home from Cruiser Moab.

The 22R-E swap went fairly easy; the tranny is the same or similar to the one used with the 1986/87 22R-TE powered trucks sold in the USA. IIRC the engine mounts were even the same! John said the wiring switch from diesel (simple) to petrol (more involved) was the hardest part.

The end result is is more horsepower yet still O.K. fuel mileage (25 US mpg highway.)

Regards,

Alan

i have an AWESOME brand new Weber carb for a 22r motor, buy it now and ill save you $100 and ship for free...it's in the classifieds here on MUD

good luck

I swapped in a 22re into my "89 lj73. Had to source a bellhousing from a turbo 4runner to fit my r151 tranny. then the engine bolted in. Exaust and intake are on opposite sides. Battery had to swap sides but the exaust was a staight shot. Figuring out the ECU harness took me the longest but someone sells the harness with just the essentials.

John,
you should have done a write up with each step and you would have become a God to many LJ78/LJ71 owners out there...

thanks fellas! I appreciate all of the feedback, I am pretty sure this is the route will go if and/or when the time comes... as for now the prado and i keep rolling on!
Thanks again,
Trent
