22 year old Timing Belt ...

I just did this on my truck. I am in San Diego. A local shop I trust quoted me ~$1700 to do the timing belt, seals, pump, etc. Did not include cam seals on my VVTI truck. I ended up doing this myself. I did replace the crank seal but left my VVTi cam seals in place. they were not seeping or leaking at 180k miles.

I see frequent posts about delaying timing belt replacement from the appearance of the timing belt being removed. Almost always there are a number of other parts being replaced at that time. It is not simply a timing belt replacement. Water pump in particular is important since its driven off the timing belt but checking bearings on idlers/pulleys while you are in there are also important. A seized pump, idler, etc can leave you by the side of the road or possibly break or strip a belt. A bad tensioner can allow for jumped timing. All those things get replaced when you do the belt. Not preaching, just trying to add to the conversation.

The original owner of my truck maintained it by the book but unfortunately he used a local shop that used aftermarket parts. As a result, the original timing belt and related components were replaced right at 90k miles, but with a Gates kit (not even Aisin). The Gates water pump started leaking well before the 90k miles it should have lasted. It would have been a much better decision to have just left all of the original factory assembled Toyota parts in there instead.

dont let the magic out!
