Those of us wishing for a special edition with lift/tires/armor/rack don't seem to understand the extent to which toyota would be held liable if any of that contributed to an accident. And it would definitely contribute to an accident if sold to the broader public.

Toyota is FAR too conservative to allow this.

Personally? If I were far richer than I am I'd be buying one of these. It is the most special stock 200 I can get, and as I get older I appreciate nearly stock more and more. But if I had that kind of money I'd also have a mint 40th and a bunch of other cruisers as well.

Edit: and because I don't want my phone listening at all times I don't use Siri, which means Apple Carplay won't work. Learned that detail with a rental VW.

Yet Ford sells the Raptor and Toyota sells the TRD versions of various vehicles. Dealer installed does not change much and we have at least as much liability with that. I don't think liability drives the decision as much as people are not going off road in a $100,000 Land Cruiser and that is where the price would end up. I think Toyota would be ahead of the game offering a lower trim model Land Cruiser.

Good grief, what a bunch of debbie downers!!!

Toyota makes a factory special edition with things that everyone in here does to their 200 and you complain? WTF?

Complain about the lack of storage space because of the coolbox, so they make one without it.
Complain about the third row, so Toyota takes it out.
You take off the running boards, so Toyota now sells them without them.

Updated headlights, cool trim, etc.... Bronze colored BBS???

Whats not to like?

Every single one of you would take one of these over a normal black or white one in heartbeat, so what are you complaining about?

I think its awesome.

I was going to sit this one out, but here's my $0.02 :hillbilly:

If you want to buy a basic Tacoma or 4runner, it's easy to find. If you want more capability, the TRD off road package adds a locking rear differential, CRAWL, skid plates, etc. for a minimal amount of additional money. If you want more still, you can get the TRD Pro which adds better skids, better suspension, factory snorkel (Tacoma), etc.

If you want to buy a basic 200, you can't. If you want to buy more capable 200, you can't. Finally Toyota releases a "special edition" 200 after TWELVE years in production which is absolutely forever in today's day and age, and yet nothing mechanical has changed whatsoever, only little cosmetic tweaks. Third row removed? Mine was too right away and replaced with ARB drawers. Running boards removed? Mine were too and replaced with sliders. Cool box removed? Well, a lot of people buy the truck wanting that option. Bronze 18" TRD wheels added? So what you can buy lots of aftermarket or even OEM Toyota wheels that work, and bronze is a very polarizing color that most people don't even like. The problem we have with this special edition is that unlike the Tacoma or 4runner, this truck is not objectively better in any way. Toyota makes OEM snorkels, lockers, aux gas tanks and even a winch for the 200 in the rest of the world, so I think we were hoping if there was a special edition 200 it would get some of those instead of badges and visual tweaks.

Is it better than nothing? Sure I guess. Is it as good as it could have been? Not even remotely.

I dig it, not that I’m going to run out and place a deposit. At least they are doing something.

I understand that, but was anybody even expecting a special edition?

And as far as whats offered on the 200 elsewhere, would anyone in the US even want a snorkel on their brand new 200? I wouldn't. And I dont think lockers would make the 4wd system any better. Winches are a liability thing, you can blame our lawyers for that.

I get your argument. I saw a Toyota ad recently in a magazine with their TRD models side by side, all white, Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Runner, looking all tough and thought "where the H is the Land Cruiser?!?!" It was conspicuously absent.

But to say, "Is it not as good as it could have been? Not remotely." I dont think is really accurate, because I think the question is, what were they trying to do with this special edition?

I think they did a good job of giving the market at least some of what they wanted, and that everyone in here has been asking for. (Or most, Ive had 200s with and without the coolbox and I prefer it without, for the added space. And removing a coolbox aint easy.) They also spruced up the exterior and gave it a mild refresh.

Ok, ok so I think Toyota missed a GOLDEN opportunity here. Its obvious, easy, no brainer. Maybe theres still time.

Offer it in a SPECIAL PAINT COLOR! :bang:

And you know what color? Wait for it.....

Amazon Green. With tan leather and gold wheels. Or gray leather and gray wheels. Done. Id literally give my left pinky toe for one.

EDIT: And to be 100% honest, I don't really like the vintage TLC badge on the D pillar. We could lose that. Toyota, are you paying attention to this?

I’m sure Toyota will sell every last one. Over in the 80s forum the 40th anniversary cruisers are sought out by certain individuals. I’m of the opinion that we should be thankful Toyota still bring the 200 to our shores. As has been the case since the 80 series, the average NEW land cruiser buyer has no interest in all the off road extras. Most of those types of things are added by 2nd or third owners.

I just don’t like the fact it only comes in black and white

That's the only part I liked.

I would definitely want a snorkel on a new 200, and I'm actually about to cut a hole in my 2016 to put one on (TJM Airtec). I'd also trip over myself going to the dealer if they offered a 200 with lockers (even just a rear). I think the new front grill and headlights look bad a$$ on the heritage, but I agree on the badging - just not necessary.

Full disclosure, I'm not a typical 200 buyer...or typical buyer of any sort really...in that I gladly took my new to me 200 on a bunch of trails in Moab after I had only had it maybe 3 weeks at most.

If they want a “Heritage” something-or-other...

-How about something we used to get back in the day....like a factory rear locker?

Instead, it’s deletes we already do.

“Heritage?”
I don’t Get it.

Yeah. And sometimes it seems like they are trying to reduce left over parts inventory. Rear entertainment, third row, etc. I saw LR do this with the last year or two of the LR4. They put out some "edition" with a fancy name (Landmark or something) and basically pushed the left over inventory out the door before introducing their Discovery crossover.

Just in time lean manufacturing doesn't have "left over parts," so doubtful.

Instead of a "Heritage" edition, why not a Raptor fighter, which could genuinely demand a price premium?

I agree on the lower trim Cruiser, but Ford's raptor decision has little bearing on what toyota will do. Also the TRD Pro models don't have nearly the mods people here are clamoring for.

Because it would be nearly impossible to add that much power and suspension and have it be as reliable/durable as landcruisers are expected to be.

Im sorry, but that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

We haven't had a 5 passenger Land Cruiser in the US in 22 years. Thats new.

Guarantee you these things will bring a premium for years to come, just like 40th Anniversary and Collectors Edition 80s do.

I ask again, whats NOT to like about this version compared to the regular one?

I guess the answer is that there’s nothing this vehicle offers that we don’t already have. Right now...and without the inevitable “dealer premium” that will come with it. This vehicle *will come with a higher sticker price for something that literally costs less to manufacture. That kinda sucks.

What would I have liked? Factory front and rear e-lockers...throw in a “TRD-inspired” bypass suspension with a 2-3” lift...for aesthetics they could’ve ditched the sombrero and installed a throwback “TOYOTA” front grill...and for Gods sakes, have it come with some LEGIT 33-34” A/T’s!!!

You know, have it come with features we WANT

Of course, no one is right or wrong here. Just an opinion of what we individually wished Toyota would have delivered as a special edition. Some more vocal about their positions than others in what their own ideal of "The Homer" should be and look like.

Truth is, the more hardcore would have swapped out whatever it comes with regardless. Just like many lesser Toyota TRD owners are finding, resulting in them paying a premium for what ultimately is a rear quarter sticker. At least the aesthetic effort here is more than that. With a head start on some deletes, even if some may view "deletes" as non-substance.

Either way, this one will sell. And hold special cachet in the used car market. To be further accessorized to whatever individuals wants. The popular media outlets do seem pretty warm on this effort.

It's not for me, so me 2cents don't matter either.

I was excited to see the article and the (almost sure) Forged BBs wheels.

I may not be in the majority but I like the badges!

But I will keep looking at a 16-19 because I want the third row and because I would rather have a 16-19 with coilovers than a special trim on the 2020.

Now - if the special trim had included Fox coilovers from the Tundra (revalved and different APEC in thEurope back etc) and or a factory locker (s)- I would have paid for that.

Heritage, you say?

I've not looked @ the heritage article, but based upon the comments, you young fellas would've been mighty disappointed back in 1978, with the changes/advances Toyota made to the FJ55. As a 1977 owner, I was astounded to find a new 1978 FJ55 on the lot in Emporia, KS.

Take a look for yourselves:

1977 FJ55

https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2018/07/26/hemmings-find-of-the-day-1977-toyota-fj55-land-cruiser/

1978 FJ55 (the EPA figures for California emissions-equipped Wagons were 8 MPG city, 12 MPG highway)

https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2015/06/16/rugged-and-reliable-1978-toyota-land-cruiser-brochure/

Still wondering what the '78 had over the previous year? Look @ those taillights again . . . . that was it, other than the MSRP. I paid full MSRP for my 1977 FJ55, $7500. The MSRP on the 1978 was $14,000!

Sorry Toyota, it's not a "heritage" edition if it doesn't add anything unique to the last 60 years of LCs. At least add a white roof, like on the FJ40... oh wait they already did that on the FJ Cruiser.

I think the gripe here is that Toyota went half-assed on the effort to strip it down. They removed the cool box and rear seats... yeah but there's still an insane amount of electronics. Heated/cooled seats? Electronic folding mirrors? Nav system? Get rid of all that and create a inexpensive "heritage" edition with minimal electronics to go wrong. Or add something like lockers or a higher end suspension to make it worth whatever premium dealers are going to try to place on it because of the blacked out chrome and BBS wheels.

I like my cool box. Do not care for 3rd row but I have not removed it. When I buy sliders the side steps will go. I just bought a new to me 16 so no 2020 in my future. I like my factory rims just want new tires when current ones wear out. I will eventually put in better shocks, struts and springs. Would I have bought a 2020 probably assuming no price gouging. What I do want are those rear badges on sides, they are cool.

2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition debuts before Chicago Auto Show

I like most of you guys would delete content. I would delete 3rd row. My 3rd row is in the basement now. I would delete second row heated seats. Delete nav. Delete the rear entertainment(next on my list) Better skid plates. a little more lift like the other thread here with the Extreme version in Dubai. I would like the Aux tank that Toyota offers in other markets the range on this thing is horrible. I want at least a rear locker.
My F-150 has 30 gallons of gas and a little better mileage it will do almost 500 miles on the highway. My F-250 makes it up by having 40 gallons of gasoline underneath it.
