Friday the radio got stuck on one station and MFD screen wouldn't bring up anything except camera view when parking. HVAC and exterior temp worked with MFD black. Sunday when I started the truck the MFD message was "reading map" and then "Unable to read a program. Please contact to a dealer." (Yep, not great English). Now there is no MFD display, no temp readings, no radio and clock time is wrong. On "Auto" HVAC fan blows warm.

Still under warranty and the dealer is taking a look now. I'll post the outcome.

Anybody had any similar experiences?

Thanks for your suggestions.

I don't think it could be water damage. I haven't notice any water anywhere and where I live we only get 8-9 inches of precipitation a year on average. Plus the Cruiser is in the garage half the day or more.

It could be the SD card. Prior to this I hadn't taken out. Yesterday I tried removing it before starting it and I got the same message about "contact to a dealer." Put it back in, restarted and it was the same thing. If I hear from my service writer I'll suggest they check that.

Does the SD card from a Tundra or Sequoia work in the Cruiser? If it is vehicle specific I doubt they've got one lying around they could try.

BTW, if all it takes to disable the MFD, stereo and HVAC is a corrupted SD card that is a serious Achilles heel in the system design.

Toyota warranty center says try a new SD card after factory reset and test found no issue but MFD still doesn't work.

Sequoia and Tundra cards will not work.

If SD card does not fix the problem, they will remove MFD and ship to Toyota before a new one is shipped to the dealer. It is a $3,500 part.

Getting a Toyota extended warranty as soon as I can.

2 week update.

First they tried a factory reset, diagnostics, fuses, etc.... No joy.

Then they tested the Micro-SD card with the map and said it was good. Since they had exhausted their diagnostic checklist, they called the Toyota Warranty Center.

Toyota warranty center said to try a new 'known good' Micro-SD card. They had it shipped in but it didn't work.

Supposedly once an SD card is inserted it marries to that particular head unit and won't work in a different one.

Toyota warranty center then said "try a new head unit and a different known good SD card" which also did not work.

Toyota Warranty Center decided the first new head unit must be defective so they should try another new head unit. However, MFD/head units for 2018 LCs are on a nation wide back-order. No ETA on when it will come in.

Was told that because this is warranty work I won't get the old head unit back.

Oh for the good old days of dials and levers.

Oooof, so basically no HVAC at all with a bad MFD?

Yes. No HVAC and of course no radio, cameras or nav.

I think there might be an override for defrost, but it was in the 90s when I lost the MFD so I didnt get to teat that.
