Is siri not being required a toyota thing? My only experience with CarPlay was in two different Volkswagens a couple years ago and Siri had to be enabled for the head unit to connect to the device, period.

You are correct. I was wrong about this.

While you don't need to use Siri to enter interact with Google Maps or Waze while using Car Play, Siri is used to play messages. I don't know what would happen if you tried to disable Siri.

When I used CarPlay in a rental car, I set my map destination with my phone before I started moving (just as I do normally in my LC which doesn't have CarPlay). I then used the on-screen map and controls as needed.

Using google maps and waze sucks when you don’t have cell service which is about 92% of the time I go camping. By design.

Did you try downloading maps for use in off-line mode?

Yeah, I find that process to suck. IMO

I use Gaia for off-road nav, this plus the factory gps.

When cell service is available and traveling through cities I’ll use google maps and waze, see their routes and confirm route in factory gps. If they’re the same or close, I’ll use the factory, if they’re different, I’ll use the phone/iPad.

I haven't tried using Google off-line maps. When I was off-road in Colorado, I used FunTreks, which seemed to work on OK. I haven't tried Gaia.
