Yeah probably best to either polish the lens or replace entire assembly.

In theory if you can keep the new surface from oxidizing it shouldn’t fade again. Clear coat is one way to do that but it can chip from rock strikes.
I know it's not an answer to the OP's question - but as far as maintenance I use 303 Aerospace Protectant monthly. I just set a reminder in my phone, and I go out in the garage and give them a quick shot. It's worked for me since I polished my 13's headlights a few years ago.
