2011 OEM audio system quality...is it really this mediocre?

Why am I not getting a full-range signal.
The amplifier doesn't send a full range signal, as in its designed to not be full range. There is no way around that other than ripping whole system out.

Impedance (ohms) is only part of the story. Yes similar ohms will be “safe” and not cook the amplifier, but as @lx200inAR stated above sensitivity is a very important indicator of how much sound a speaker will make for a given amplifier output level. And even that spec may (usually does) change with the frequency the speaker is driven at.

To get aftermarket speakers to approximate the stock output levels you’d need to match impedance and sensitivity. And even then the tuning can be very different.

A full aftermarket system might fix this, but in my experience it is very rare for an aftermarket system to be as harmonically balanced and tuned for the individual vehicle as a good stock system. It is very easy to make it louder.. and for some people this is all they want. But for it to sound “good”.. whole different thing. That is the whole point of the ML system in the LX.. yes, a lot of power, but very very careful speaker selection, placement, tuning, and equalization.. in part to cancel out the reality that this is installed into a metal and glass can with some leather seats, not a sound studio. The JBL system isn’t as well developed, but it is a whole lot further along than what the vast majority of audio shops can do.

This.
For me, i enjoy the JBL system quite a bit.

Yes, Mark Levinson in Lexus is da bomb. Center channel is a combo of 3.5” woofer and tweeter…as are the surround speakers in cargo…LC lacks tweeter at these locations. In addition, i believe that it has 6x9 woofers for mid bass in the 2nd row rear doors…3 speakers in LX rear door vs. 2 in LC.

Add to that a cleaner amp with more wattage. Someone needs to do a full transplant to LC! :)

On mine all the stars and planets need to be aligned a certain way, temperature and humidity needs to be within a certain range, truck needs to be at the correct angle and speed for it to sound good.
When all is aligned right it sounds pretty pretty pretty pretty good.
Best sounding song so far in my 200 is Post Malone's WOW using Bluetooth and Dolby Atmos set to Always On on the iPhone, all levels all the way right, VOL 45, DSP ON if I'm feeling crazy.

A critical part of tuning a sound system is sending appropriate frequencies to each driver. A woofer should not receive high frequencies and a tweeter cannot receive low frequencies from an amplifier.

I don’t think that Dolby Atmos setting on iPhone works on LC’s audio system via BT. I don’t think that Dolby will work on just any BT connected device. It only works with Apple’s headphones with spatial audio capability via chip.

I know when you set it to download the Dolby Atmos version it also downloads the stereo version for incompatible devices.
But I notice a huge difference when setting to Always On, on certain songs.

I have the Levinson in my 04 LX470 and I love it.

Digital Sound Processing, does some surround sound fakery.
Use it when you want your audio to sound like it's coming from where it shouldn't be coming from, not really for music, more from the DVD system.

Exactly. I found music much better without DSP enabled. But when feeling crazy..

How is it for DVD when most LC / LX don’t have DVD player? Lexus LS or Toyota Avalon have DSP also…and they have no DVD player.

The LC (like Lexus LS, Toyota Avalon etc) has a 7.1 surround sound “fakery”. And it is 100% for music.

But this JBL / Mark Levinson 7.1 is NOT like what you have in your home theater (or 5.1 for that matter).

In car audio, 7.1 is used so that every seat in the car gets similar sound quality. It is not really meant for true surround sound that you are familiar with in movies…as in bullets flying by your head or voices coming from behind your head (as you get from home theater 5.1/7.1).

The car audio 7.1 audio system is tuned so that no matter what seat you sit in your LC, and close your eyes, the sound SHOULD come from the front of your seating position and NOT side bias. There should be some ambient sounds surrounding your front stage of music. You should not hear much (if at all) from back of your head.

And this is why the three 3.5” speakers (dash speakers) are pointed up into the windshield (and why we have acoustic windshield)…they bounce the vocals and midrange off the windshield to the rest of the car seats.

And this is also why the rear door (2nd row) speakers are NOT loud. They are there for ambience and filling in the sound for the 2nd passengers. They are NOT meant as surround speakers for the driver & front seat passenger.

The bass should be direction-less (as it should) from all direction. Because of the harsh environment of car and the tiny subs, JBL (and Mark Levinson, and pretty much everyone at Harman) uses big door 6x9 woofers to augment the bass produce by the subwoofer in the cargo...so that the bass is more encompassing.

This 7.1 car audio is used by many OEM manufacturers, esp the Harman group (JBL, Mark Levinson, Harman Kardon, etc.).

For me, i leave the DSP ON because i like that the soundstage is wider in front with it. You don’t really lose any quality by having it on, except for wider soundstage which is always a plus in a car environment. I hate traditional aftermarket setup where you know exactly where sound is coming from which speaker when listening to music. But that’s just me.

My 2013 LC has a DVD player.

Not that I’m disagreeing with your assessment that the “surround” system is different than home theater. But it is absolutely a dvd player in the dash.

Wow…i stand corrected. Damn, Toyota took that away from me?! :(

Are you sure? I am almost certain that my former '13 LC had a dvd player (never used it, but used the slot for a phone mount).

My 2019 LC has CD player…can it play DVD??

Can your 2016 LC play DVD ?

I thought that was the whole point of the often-removed rear seat entertainment screens. On my 13 it hangs down from the roof though.

The 2010 LX also has DVD. Do any of the trucks with RES not have a DVD player?

2019 can play DVD, put in park and set parking brake, slide in DVD? No?
