Hi everyone! I have a FZJ-71 with a 1FZ engine. Since it was brand new it consumes about 1 lt. every 3000Km (no matter if I put mineral or synthetic oil, always the same). It has now 28000 KM. I made correctly the break in (I have done some break ins in my previos vehicles the same way and no problem). I made the oil changes at 5.000Km. I have done many test to see if the car is burning oil and it is not burning. there is no blue smoke on the exhaust, I made my father go behind me and I rev the engine to 5.000 RPM and no smoke came out. Another thing, the engines consumes oil, but the oil does not turns black, it stills transparent but the car consumes it. There is no leak under the vehicle or the filter. So, after describing the failure here is what I found just today, and I would like to hear your thoguhts. On the back on the engine on top of cylinders 5 & 6 there is dirt with oil, all over the plastic that covers the spark plug wires. I suspect that my problem is a seal problem on the top of the engine and the oil is evaporating over there. My questions are: - Is it possible what I am describing? - Should I remove the plastic cover and check for anything in particular? - What are the seals that could have fail? Thanks you all for everything, hope you can help me. Thanks in advance

Though I cannot say much about the cause of the oil-problem, 1 liter per 3000 km's is out of range.
But why make it your problem?
It's a new rig. So you should have warranty. Why not let the dealer solve the problem? And if the dealer is not able/willing to do so, go to Toyota-representative for your area.
If you start wrenching/altering things yourself, you're giving the dealer the opportunity to say that you are causing/being part of the problem yourself.

The valve cover can leak a lot of oil but it wouldnt evaporate. It would make a big mess on the side of the engine.
The valve cover screws need to be tightened equally. If the screws are loose around the leak you could tighten them.
The rubber seal can be used many times over.

I would contact the dealer also;)

Dealers just ruin cars of people who try to claim for warranty in my country. If I go to them and tell them that probably they will tell me they help me, then call me in 3 days, the say "the car is ready", and the have done nothing and probably they change my brand new parts to another car, like the A/C Compressor, belts, or something. Also if they have honest mechanics, and they start to mess with the engine, they can probably let it worst, beleive me, in my country is VERY VERY risky to get your car to a mechanics. By the way, the last oil change I put Castrol Syntec 5w50, it has now 2000km and the oil level is completely full, maybe my problem was the oil I was using, it was a 15w40 and probably in my weather it made a difference, I dont know, what do you think?

By all means, where are you living? If even the Toyota-dealer is that dishonest.
Ok, I know some dealers should not be Toyota-representatives, but if it's that bad:mad::mad::mad::crybaby::crybaby::crybaby:

I don't know where you live so I cannot say anything about weather-related issues.
But as you stated that you could not see any oil being burned, I assume it has a relation to something you did during maintenance. I have no explanation as why changing from the previous oil to 5w50 can have stopped the loss of oil.

Hi Ron, the Toyota dealers are no that dishonest, the mechanics who work there ARE dishonest!. I live in Venezuela. There are probably some dealers out there where they have control on their mechanics and they can't steal anything, but my experience is they don't care about customers. My theory about the cease of the oil consuption is that here (VENEZUELA) it is always around 25 to 30 degrees celcius, also every weekend I go on highway like 5 hours with the engine non-stop at 3500-4000 rpm, so I think the oil gets to hot and if is not a good quality oil it evaporated. I tried with the following: 0-1000Km: factory oil (no clue what it was) 1000-6000Km: PDV 15w40 API SL (PDV is a local company, they used to make pretty good oils but it appears they doesnt make them good anymore) 6000-11000Km: PDV 15w40 API SL 11000-16000Km: PDV 15w40 API SL 16000-22000Km: PDV 15w40 API SL 22000-26000Km: Castrol GTX 15w40 API SL (I got sick of the PDV's oil consuption and tried with Castrol Mineral, same consuption) 26000km->Present Castrol Syntec 5w50 Also a 50 oil should resist higher temperatures than a 40 oil, so I think my oil was evaporating. Anyway if when I get to 3000Km my oil level is full then I will be very happy!

So you do your maintenance yourselve?

Most important of all: the oil consumption has dropped.
I think a 50 weight oil is mucht better under 25-30 deg C -conditions.
Hope you've solved your problem.

Yes I do the maintenance by myself to this Land Cruiser and the one before this one. I love to do it!. Hopefully my oil consuption problems are solved, I will write here again in two weeks (about 1.000kms) and tell you how is it going if you like to. Thanks for everything

Wrenching on cruisers is fun!!!!

Yes, would like to read about the outcome.
