In need of some advice/support from the community on what I think is a CV/FDS issue. In the last couple of days I started getting a popping/binding sound when I turn the wheel all the way to the right (pulling into a parking spot, turning the vehicle around, etc.). A little investigation on the truck and using this site tells me it’s something with the CV/FDS. I am seeing a small amount of grease at the boot seal (passenger side) and it’s clear it has been flung out onto the LCA a bit.

So question is, how do I know whether it needs to be reclamped, rebooted, or if I need a new CV/FDS? Also - how detrimental is it to keep driving the truck in this kind of state.

A bit about the truck - it’s a 2006 LX470 with no modifications.I bought it with 100k on the clock and it’s at 112k, Lexus history shows the CVs were rebooted at ~80k at a Lexus dealer. The boot with the grease leak at the clamp does not appear to have any kind of tear in it.

A few pictures below (I know it’s a minimal amount of grease - but the drivers side shows no signs of grease and there is not a popping sound turning left).

Napa has metal/steel ties, get one of those and the tool to tighten those metal ties. Remove your old and install the new tie.

If you plan to replace the CV, go with OEM. You can get the entire axle minus inboard joint. Use yours and get it done the wight way. At the same time you need to replace the hub flange at the wheel.

USe OEM boots if you plan to boot it. Non OEM boots slipt around 20K like what happened to my 4R.

Definitely going to go the OEM route if I need to replace the CV - just trying to figure out if that is what is needed and how immediate is the need? Or maybe I misdiagnosed and am chasing the wrong fix?

@UMcruiser what'd you end up doing with this?

I have pretty much the exact same look to my CV boots and wondering what I need to do to them.

I ended up not doing anything because the amount of grease coming out is really minimal. I check it regularly to make sure the severity hasn’t increased. Eventually I will remove an replace but it’s not showing to be an issue as of now… the popping sound I had was actually from a different, easily solved, issue.

Can you share more about the popping?

Cool. I ended up just replacing with those rolled edge McMaster Carr worm clamps.

OP description of popping/binding. Is likely CDL is on (engaged).

Make sure "CDL" not engaged. Sometimes the CDL light on dash does not work. This is very often, do to a switch on transfer case freezing, due to lack of use.

When CDL is engaged, on dry pavement. Wheels/tires will binding in sharp turns, most noticeable in reverse.
