Hey everyone,

Quick post to check the quote for the work that my 2005 LC with over 200k needs -

I brought my truck into the toyota dealer here in Costa Mesa, CA yesterday for a regular oil & fluid change. I knew it was in need of more maintenance so I wanted a full inspection.

in addition to the hoses that need to be replaced including the T-hoses behind the engine which I expected they are saying I need to replace -
CV Boots = $1,520
Rack & Pinion = $2,400

Struts & Shocks = $1,600 - I'm looking at upgrading to OME so I want to hold off on this and not have the dealer do it.

Keeping in mind that this is Orange County Ca, I know the prices are higher than other places

Thanks for any advice you may want to give - also I'd be all for taking it to a non-dealer shop if I knew a good one for Land Cruisers down here...

You could buy entirely new CVs and install yourself for less than $900. Boots torn or just leaking?
Steering rack leaking? So what, refill oil, or replace yourself for <$500 if I'm recalling the price of that part correctly.
There are no struts, just 4 shocks, they are cheap and easy to replace.

Run away from the dealer.

Are you mechanically inclined? If so, invest in the tools and get it all done yourself.

Just the quote for the shocks is ridiculous-OEM parts would be $350ish and an hour and a half of work max DIY ( with holes drilled for access to rears!)

Thanks for the advice so far... I had the dealer hold off on everything other than the hoses since they already started on them.
I gave TopLine Performance in Huntington Beach a call and will take it to them for what is at least 30% less than the dealer... and I feel much better about it already.
I don't have the space or equipment to be comfortable doing any of this work myself... as much as I am always looking for an excuse to buy new tools :p

That all sounds good for paying a shop to do it. The rack and CVs are a significant amount of labor, so those prices seem normal for a dealer, IMO.

Make sure to replace the hub flanges if you're doing a new CV outer and make sure they know how to service the bearings and the snap ring. That job is similar to other 4x4's, but has absolutely CRITICAL steps (greasing bearings, watching oil lip seals, never re-using snap ring, etc..) that can easily be skipped by shops - even decent ones. We've seen more than one person have catastrophic failure in the hubs because a shop didn't quite know what they were doing.

Thank you for that! I'll make sure the shop is aware.

Also, I'll be placing an order for your YMD1 Key FOB... been wanting to for a while, but now that I'm investing some time and money back in my 100 I think it's time. Thanks again for the advice.

It would be cheaper and smarter to just move from California.

Spoken like someone that doesnt live in every other state in the west

Yep. Spoken like someone that has never printed the soil of the Hotel California state, does print the soil of the Rockies when bowhunting wapiti but....never sends anything do a dealer.

You lost me, but I'm getting my joke may have been out of line

Never been to Cali. Have been to Colo. Don't use dealers. And still think Cali and dealers are two bad options.

Take it to RPM offroad in Monrovia

Toy Shop in Cypress. Just call ahead and make an appt. Got my LX inspected there, pre-purchase.

Gotta go to Yosemite at least once in your life.

Much of that can be done by you if you have some mechanical aptitude. Plenty of write-ups here on the repairs you have listed, granted it will take a bit so if this is your only vehicle, it takes it out of the fight for a bit.

Also, check the clubhouse section and fish around with the local Landcruiser clubs, same may be able to help with labor and/or tools, some may have some options for cruiser friendly shops if you want to have the repairs done for you, but don't want to get bent over by the Stealership,

Second on RPM Garage in Monrovia. Very fair prices and top notch work. I travel all the way from Irvine/Laguna to have them do work on my 100.

In Laguna Hills there is a shop called Cruiser Tech that I may check out next time I need work as they are much closer. They specialize in Land Cruisers and do custom fab work.
