Working on restoring a 2003 for my daughters first car. I’ve searched and can’t find results related to this if I missed a previous post my apologies. Pretty new to the forum. Here’s my question I need help with. I’ve got good cold air when the rpm’s are over 1000. But as soon as I come to a stop and idle the light for ac starts flashing the ac kicks off and the air gets hot. Take off from red light. Hit the ac button and the air is cold again until I come to a stop. Any ideas on what I should check to start figuring this out?

Sounds like something is going on at the condenser or low refrigerant.

Do RPMs over 1000 at a stop make the system work, or do you have to be moving?

What are coolant temps doing idling and moving? Normal? A/C will cut off when coolant temps get to 220* I do believe. Fins in condenser and/or radiator may need a good cleaning.

You need to get a gauge set and check your pressures. It could be as simple as low refrigerant.
