Why? Three transmissions known bad in 9 model years of production ?

Knowing my luck it will probably happen... I already had to deal with the AHC pump!

Quit being a cry baby

I guess I should tell you the rest of the story... I didn't pay for it

I'm having a similar problem and the details are posted under Overdrive Problems.

I think what the problem was on the 2000 trannies was a bad batch of torque converters. I work at a trans shop and it's hard to keep all the data in my head. If the trans hasn't sucked all the metal out of the pan into the trans you may be able to replace the converter only and service the trans. If you get a reman unit you may want to ask questions about where they come from. I had a powerstroke before that ate 4 transmissions in one year before the dealer figured it out but the remans were being built by some mom and pop operation out of ohio that had a contract w/ Ford. Remember the dealer has no way of repairing transmissions, they only do complete unit swap repairs. So maybe check w/ a reputable tranny shop for repairs? I'm going to check my bulletins on that trans at work today and if I found anything pertinent to your case then I'll forward it tonight.

I have a 2000 LC, also replaced transmission. It went around 50,000 miles and dealer said it was a bad torque converter--first sign of problem has grinding noises in overdrive. It was under warranty at the time, and the dealership replaced entire unit with a remanufactured one. No problems since.

2000 Land Cruiser Transmission Failed

Transmission on my 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser just failed at over 100K.

I learned that mechanics who specialize in Toyota repairs have seen failed transmissions specifically on 2000 and 2001 Land Cruisers. Toyota released an “updated” transmission after 2001 and this would indicate that they were aware of transmission problems but sacrificing few unlucky Toyota owners was probably cheaper than announcinfg a recall.

I wrote to Toyota but their cut-and-paste response indicated that they are more interested in protecting its immediate financial interests than supporting its products.

167,000 and counting - I am going to try to change the fluid since I am close enough to the 100k I wanted out of the rebuilt one

My wife's 2001 Sequoia (which also has the A343 in it I believe) has a failure at 158k. The torque converter locked up making it stall when you came to a stop unless you got on it quick and it peeled out for a moment before getting some speed (how we got it home). It would run fine at highway speeds, the T/C was just locked the whole time getting up to those speeds.

I installed a dealer reman (they gave me their cost, turned out to be right at 2k after taxes and core refund) and she has been great. Albeit it's only been about 8k miles. The swap was easy, it took maybe 6 hours (because I took my time). Though I expect the LC to take a little longer due to the T-Case & extra driveshaft.

I elected to replace the whole unit because it was what my family was going to be riding in. I really didn't want to piecemeal it. (Though i wouldn't consider a drain, clean & refill piecemeal because it isn't a repair)

The Sequoias had a bad run of planetary gear sets (that is the commonly used explanation) and even if i were to buy those it would still cost hundreds. There was also the chance that it may crap out again in another year and I would have wasted all that money. Hence the decision to get a reman.

I have a 2000 cruiser and (as I posted before) I already warned the wife to expect another reman trans if the trans in it craps out. Good luck, I recommend a dealer trans.

I believe that generation Sequoia had the A340 transmission, not the A343.

You may be correct (as correct as wikipedia says, that is the only documentation i could find). Regardless, I do not think anyone is arguing that toyota had a bad run of parts placed in early 20xx transmissions.

My point was to comment on the factory replacement transmission. We have not had any issues with ours, I would recommend a dealer transmission
