I have a 2000 cruiser that has been well maintained. Two weeks ago the truck stalled at a redlight while my wife was driving. When I arrived on the scene it seemed the vehicle was in a high gear when I shifted it into drive or reverse and it stalled. The service guy said it seemed the torque converter was stuck and thought it may be electrical. The problem corrected itself by the time it was towed to the shop. They drove it a few days and returned it to me. A week later it happend again and we towed it back in. There were able to experience the problem at the shop but it self corrected. They had not codes and no way to tell what was causing the problem. They drove it a few more days and then said they would drop the pan and clean the screen on the transmission and hope it was a hydrulic issue. When they droped the pan it was full of metal. They are recommending a remanufactured toyota transmission as the cure.

I have seen a little talk about transmission issues with 2000 cruisers and lx470s. I was wondering if the replacement of the transmission with a remanufactured transmission is a good ling term fix. The truck only has 77k on it and I wanted to drive it another 100k. Not sure if I should fix it and trade it before the warranty is out on the remanufactured transmission or if this is a good repair and I can keep it another 100k miles.

There has been little talk because there have been almost no issues at all with these transmissions. I think if you go with a Toyota reman unit you will probably have no problems in the future. Sorry to hear about your experience.

For board info - Was the transmission ever serviced? Fluid change, flush ect... Although at 77k I doubt fluid failure has anything to do with the problem. Probably a single bad part or even assembly error.

Tell the shop that for the cost of the new unit and install that you want them to identify exactly what broke and if possible give you the bad parts. We will require post-mortem photos to do a proper inquest.

I've been on this board for about 2 years now and I can only remember 2 or 3 people that had transmission problems like this. I would think a new re-man'd transmission should give you the mileage you're looking for.

Maybe some of the guys that work for dealerships can chime in to let us know if they've seen more of these popping up. On the 80 vs. 100 thread, there was a Toyota Tech in AK talking about working on a lot of 100's. SinCity, LexusBen, C-Dan; some of them might be able to give good advice too. Good luck to you and sorry to hear the bad news.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of price is the dealer asking for a new transmission?

Total bummer. Good luck. Great time to put some lower gears in the t-case. You know, while your in there. See, cup half full. And WELCOME TO THE BOARD:flipoff2:

I can only recall a few trannies going bad, all being 2000's and, I think, all LX's.

welcome to the board despite the less than happy circumstances...!

given the likely cost of the repair, would it not make sense to just have them clean it up first and then see if the symptoms go away? never know....

Damn! I thing that's a GREAT idea. What do have to lose? $150 or whatever fluid/filter change.

Unfortunately, In order to get credit on his core (old trans), Toyota usually requires that transmission cores are fully assembled. :frown:

I would be curious of what part failed too

A re-man unit lists for $2545.50 , which is actually reasonable IMO ....

I`ve personally never seen a 100 series trans fail, but obviously it does happen.
Good luck !

I just received Toyota's 2007 Genuine Remanufactured Parts Guide in the mail. For a 2000 LC with the model A343F transmission, the reman transmission part number shown is 35010-6A020-84. It comes with a 12-month unlimited mileage warranty and includes the torque converter. The core value is $1,400 and it must be returned in the Toyota shipping container, fully assembled with no missing parts or external damage. If this part number is entered into the www.toyotapartscheap.com web site, the MSRP is $2,673.72 and their price is $2,138.98 with a $1,000 core value.

I'd be interesting in knowing the history of the vehicle. I'm skeptical of the "no codes" story from the dealer, especially for an intermitent problem. This is a sophisticated transmissin with codes for damn near everything. Did you check the transmission fluid level and give it the sniff test to see if it smelled burnt?

If the transmission is truly shelled-out, I'd go the Toyota reman route (be sure the dealer uses a Toyota unit and not a substitute). Your dealer should match the online price above or at least come close. I'm guessing the labor will be at least $1,000.

X2 Toyota is pretty specific on how they want them back. If not they charge back the core.

I've been with toyota/lexus since these were new and I think I have only seen 2. It happens. Your lucky a reman is available, some models have to buy new. You should be fine having a reman installed. Auto trans is a complex machine - not all could be perfect. The 1% failure, unfortunately you are in the 1 and not the 99.:frown:

"no codes" only means that the TCU did not see any faulty electrical signal from the monitored componets. The metal in the pan signals that it has a mechanical failure of large proportions:doh: It just happens that you were the unlucky one that happens to own one of the few failures of Toyota transmissions. But by all means get a "Toyota Reman" unit or CruiserDan will hex your vehicle forever.

The FSM states the suspected cause for Engine Stalls When Starting Off or Stopping is Torque Converter Clutch. The torque converter can be removed from the front of the transmission shaft after the transmission is removed from the vehicle. Before ordering the reman tranny, you could have them drop the transmission and inspect the torque converter and clutch. Either way, the transmission needs to come out so you might as well go one step at a time.

If you plan to keep the vehicle, have the rear main seal on the crank shaft replaced. Most of the cost for this job is removing the transmission. If you get lucky and only need a new torque converter and/or clutch, have the front transmission seal replaced too.

It's wierd that this is only happening on 2000 models. I wonder if it has to do with a bad batch of transmissions since it's not popping up on the 01's or newer like the 2000's.

Who ever install the new one needs to clean the cooling lines and trans coolers real well. It would be not a good thing if you get it back in and you have a failure real soon(bummer for you and the shop that put it in). You will want to make sure they will be responsiable if they make a mistake. later robbie

I'm starting to get a little nervous after reading this... I'm approaching 85K miles on mine.

Why? Three transmissions known bad in 9 model years of production ?

My new Ford (2006) at work is on its third transmission rebuild in 6 months and at 8,000 total miles. Hopefully quality is job 4!
