2000 LC Rear diff humming. (1 Viewer)

Hello all,

My 2000 LC Rear diff is humming when on movement of say from 20km/hr. It started after the rear diff oil got leaked away when I was traveling. I refill the oil at a lube station and most leaked away due to faulty gasket so I managed it back home.

My mechanic dropped the rear diff, Checked it and changed the gasket and refilled the oil. He said he did not see anything wrong with the bearings and reinstall the rear diff.

We test drive the truck and the humming sound reduced but it's still humming at higher speed.

Please anyone has an idea on what else to do I have to replace it with a new or reman one. I need help to get it done as I really need this truck to work. Loving it the more I drive it.

The oil type refilled was EP 140 API GL-4 gear oil by Sea horse. This is the most common type I can get here in Nigeria.

Is it the same fluid you had in the diff before it was making noise?

Why was the gasket failing, did you have work done before?

The rear diffs on these don't need gasket replacements, it is highly unusual.

The oil may be too light. 85W-90 is the correct weight. Yours is SAE 20W-50.

I would suggest a petroleum based product instead of a fluid made of crushed sea horses.

I don't know the type of fluid that can with it since purchase 2007.
There was a leak on the seal so I asked the mechanic to replace it so he replaced with the wrong size and I don't know what he did that also made the gasket to start leaking too.

Thanks for this info. I will go do a market search myself for this 85w-90 gear oil hopefully I will get it.
