IF that is the case you probably should be using the ester oil.

What is ester oil?

Ester oil is compatible with R12 oil and R134 oil (oil 6 and oil 8). So if your parts such as the compressor came pre-filled with oil and it was for a ’93 R12 system then you need to use Ester oil. Otherwise a new R134 system will use the PAG 46 oil.

When the system is under pressure and you have a leak, oil will be lost with the freon but usally no oil is lost when you evac the system.

If you read the TSB that medtro posted above, ND-OIL 8 / PAG-46 is the Toyota recommended oil for a retrofit.

I'd suggest getting a specialist AC shop involved. Every part that conveys refrigerant, other than the lines, has been replaced with new.

Why are not all of these parts the R134 versions?

Never mind, I thought he said oil was replaced during evacuation. Thanks Tools.

I meant to say seperately, but they have not evact the oil, which is a different process.

Are we saying then that no matter what the system has, go ahead and use the ND-OIL 8/PAG-46?

R12 system needs ND-OIL 6 for R134A and retrofits ND-OIL 8. I haven't seen Toyota recommend ester oil for anything?

I have my guy in CA getting the exact oil used for that exact compressor # from Toyota. This morning, my A/C guy confirmed he installed that particular compressor with the oil it had in it (which we are assuming is for an R12 system, so we need to know exactly what type oil it is).

If it is in fact ND-Oil 6, we will flush the system, dump the compressor and refill with ND-Oil 8 at 6 oz and R134 at about 29.98 +/- 1.76 oz with readings taken at 1500 RPM.

Hopefully my coldness is around the corner.

Tomorrow is the tell tale on the change out. We will evacuate the entire system, and recharge with R134 at 1500 RPM. Once all is completed, we willl add 6.08 oz of ND-Oil 8 and 29.98 oz +/- 1.76 oz R-134 freon.

Toyota confirmed the oil used to pre-oil the compressorordered was indeed ND-Oil 6 (mineral type), which means this, (quted from Toyota Technical Service Bulletin AC002-98 2nd Revision) "There is no need to remove or flush R-12 mineral oil from the system. Simply charge the system with the specified type and amont of PAG iol to provide proper lubrication"

ALSO

"Mineral based R-12 oil remaiins and circulates in the A/C system and does not dissolve in R134 refrigerant. This results in a cloudy appearance at the sight glass making it impossible to judge the refrigerant charge amount by using the sight glass method"

It does not mean we have to go through the entire flush, however, I do not see how that would hurt anything in tis case.

I saw that one and believe that is what I will do.

Tools R Us: One point I don't agree with is leaving the old oil in. It may not hurt, but that oil uselessly circulating takes up volume that could be freon and it's not hard to remove most of it.

I understand the only way to get the oil out is to actually dump it out of the compressor and really flush the system out good. This is most likely what we will do.

I can't wait to see if this is what has caused the problem. Because the parts were pre-oiled, there was never any oil added as lubricant for R134.

Gieser, Anything new on the AC?

I got caught behind a couple of days. Tomorrow is the day we will be finalizing the steps stated 4 posts above this one. As soon as we finish this, I will be posting an update on if this indeed was the issue.

Okay, sorry for the delay, I have been out of town. This week we will be doing the change out. I will have an update by Friday...stay tuned..

How's the AC coming?
