“Apparently” FJ62s equipped with the 4 speed automatic had a “split” TC with 2.488 low range in place of 1.959. If true, does anyone know if such TC or at least gearing is installable in a standard 1.959/38mm idler shaft split TC, behind a H55F?
Alternatively, who actually knows first hand what needs to be done to the inside of the TC rear half (in addition to the obvious rebuild) while installing the Mark’s/AA 0.92/2.81 gearset in the 38mm split TC?
BTW my TC has factory PTO on left side that I want to keep.

Wow! That’s good news. Does anyone know where I can get a set of these gears? With 4.56s I’d have ~55:1, almost as low as 62:1 with Mark’s gears, with less noise and no internal case grinding needed.
Thanks.

We can certainly help! We’ve installed lots of low gear sets and we can help with the machine work. We stock the rebuild kits and gear sets at all times.
Happy to help.

If you want to keep the PTO set up I don't think you'll be able to go any bigger than the stock FJ62 low gears. My understanding was the FJ62 low gear is 2.296, steeper than your 1.99 but not by much. As @Godwin said, the stock gears are straight across swap.

However, if you decide to ditch the PTO, I can first hand attest to @orangefj45 machining the case and going with the Sumo 3:1 low gear. It retains the stock high ratio of 1:1 which is still nice and quiet, and the Sumo low range is barely audible behind my H55F. I just had Georg do that swap for me a few weeks ago and I could not be happier with the results, feels like a totally different truck.

2.488 or 2.29 would be better than 1.959.
The project is: 88 Bandeirante OJ50 with stock Mercedes OM314. Need to change H55F input (came from BJ60) to coarse spline. 4.56 3rd members with lockers from the 60. Change 7.50-16s to 8.25R16 XZLs.
All the main parts are “free” - under a tarp next to my garage.
But ending up with the lowest low range is important.
One might ask why not do easy solution of sticking with H41 and changing to Orion? Answer: I’d kinda like 3% faster top gear, 12.8% lower in 1st and 2nd, so I can easily start in 2nd etc.
I have the Ramsey PTO winch previously mounted on the BJ60 as well.

Good luck with the trans shaft, let us know if you find one

swapped To an auto because I couldn’t find one

Maybe I will just do an Orion, leave 3.70s, use my lockers that I have, 8.25s will decrease rpm to a nice 2270 @60mph. Be happy with H41.

Not sure where you’re getting a factory 2.45:1 low gear, it’s 2.29, pretty much the same as all the USDM FJ60 low gear which is 2.27, not that you’d be able to tell a difference between 2.27/2.28/2.45 from the drivers seat anyways

I decided to KISS. Orion TC. No driveshaft or linkage mods. Keep 3.70s, put on 8.25R16s, install lockers. That’s it.
cruise speed 61, top 74. Crawl ratio 73:1.
