just found out my young rottie is going to need 2-3 thousand in surgery to shorten a growth plate in his front leg that is causing his leg to hyperextend beyond its regular bending point. it looks sick....like everytime he steps on it its going to crack in half.
anyways, i dont know what it is but we have had the worst luck with our two dogs. tyson is a purebred boxer and crash is a purebred rottie and in the two years weve had them weve probably spent 2000 on vet bills alone and now this monster surgery bill coming up is just another kick in the nads. they are both family so we will pay to get whatever needs done done, it is just hard right now becuase i have been saving to go back to school and now i will have to put the 2500 i had saved over the last few months for school to pay for my dogs leg.
i guess cruiser content is that sometime next summer ill be having to sell the cruiser for something more economical. i was planning on keeping it and just carpooling but now i wont even be able to afford tuition and living expenses. boo hoo
the other thing i didnt realize at the time was, the people we bought crash from must have been back yard breeders....i have a feeling this is a sort of genetic thing that you get from mating related dogs and whateever.
stupid me

It's a big bill, but you're gonna feel sssoooo good once it's done. Take care of that pooch, one day he will take care of you.

I just spent $1500 on my chessie figuring out that she is diabetic..

They are a member of the family..

At least that is how I see it.

But I do understand that money is something to consider. Will the surgeery make the dog a lot more comfy?? Or are you delaying the inevetable for your own benefit??

I had an $8,000 tab over the summer on my pride and joy --

-- looking back, cost wasn't the issue -- he means the world to me --

Your next sentence is the explanation to your problems.

tyson is a purebred boxer and crash is a purebred rottie

There's a reason why people aren't allowed to mate with their sisters. Purebred gene pools in America are just too shallow.

I'm sorry to hear about your problems though.

also, look at alternative diets --

-- i am a big believer in a superior diet for her overall quality of life --

RAW, BABY!

Sorry to hear that. I have a mutt lab and two papered labs. The mutt has cost us a bundle of $ and the PB labs have been trouble free. Just the opposite of what I expected.

I really feel for your dog. They don't know whats going on, they just want to have fun. Have you ever considered the fact that tripod dogs can be as happy as thier four legged friends? I am not sure how well large breeds do in the three legged mode.

Best of luck.

Well

Unfortunately, pet bills are often as high or higher than people bills - but I love my pooch sooooo much - she's an AKC Lab I "rescued" at 16 weeks old! Also, watch how your pets play and get them off neck/collar leashes - you can seriously hurt their necks without much effort (get a harness)and my buddies 2 year old black lab broke his leg going for a tennis ball on the lawn - he hit a slight depression in the lawn and landed wrong - $2000 for an operation from a specialist in this specific injury - only a few vets in the country do this. Consider pet healthcare insurance. Hey Mods, we definitely need a dog icon smilie thingy!

we take as bes a care of our dogs as we can, so of course he will get what he needs to be healthy again, the timing is just ruff. xmas, school fast approaching, just got the pickup back from the rollover/theft, etc etc etc. i beleive in karma so right now im wondering wtf did i do so wrong in my last life or i cant wait till i win the lottery next week.

I have had a dog or two or three almost all my life, and don't know how to act without one. I am sorry to hear about your dog troubles. Is there a State University close by? Many times they have the most up-to-date care and are a little less than private care. I wish you and the pooch good luck.

A couple of my non-hunting-hunters....thanks to wifey.;)

Ed, Britts are my favorites..;)

We rescue Britts and I guess I have become a bit hardened. It does not make a great deal of sense to invest that kind of money unless you have the disposible income to support it.

Cold? Yes, I guess it is. But what about your other obligations?

My first....and I'll never be without one again! He's my shotgun, goes everywhere with me. I've always had pointers and they are great, but a Britt is the best all-around dog, IMHO.

i have two worthless small dogs one is a min pin/chihuahua mix and the other is a full blooded chihuahua. They are worthless and knock on wood but we haven't had to spend anything on them yet except the cost to buy the chihuahua. but if the chihuahua keeps falling off the bed like he did this morning we will be fixing him up with a body cast.

Back home i have a great pyranees/white lab mix. When i gave him to my uncle(college) he weighed 125 but he was fat now he weighs about 120 all muscle now. Never had a problem with him and he is 11 almost 12 years old now. He is still king of the town though. He got into a fight with a bullmastiff/pit mix and if his teeth wouldn't have been rounded off he would have whooped that dog. But when he bit it didn't hurt.

enough of my story though,

Karma works in ways you haven't considered. This is your opportunity to do something good for your dog. That will set you on the right track. Don't jepordize your schooling. Keep your priorities strait and don't worry about what other people think, including the vets. The dog will always love you.

Seriously, my two purebred labs are working dogs. They are an $ and emotional investment and I absolutely love them, yet: I am about to be a dad of twins and my house is torn apart for a remodel. I don't have enough $ for the remodel as is. In my case I would have the leg of one of my working dogs amputated before extending myself any further. I know of one retriever that does the work of two dogs yet only has three legs. The dog still loves its owner as much as when it had four legs.

Just my $.02.

You said it correctly when you claimed him as family. The expense is worth it and necessary.

Wow, you must have some serious disposable income. (edit, I just went and read your post, you're going to blow your college savings on a f*cking animal?!?) There is no animal worth that much money.

Now if it was a steer, and you were paying by the pound...and your were butchering it...that'd be different...and tasty.

I used to think the same way...... until I got my Black Lab.
Macinator-
I was in the same boat as you last year. Found out my lab needed a new knee at a cost of $3,500. At the time I was a year away from finishing my PhD (i.e., NO disposable income). I decided to look into it since he no longer had use of one of his rear legs. Come to find out, I was able to get credit through the Vet for a one-year, no-interest loan, then after that I was able to transfer the remaining balance to a low-rate credit card (3.9%).
I had told myself I would never spend that much on an animal, but it is the best thing I have ever done. He is a totally different dog now. If he hadn't been so young (3 years old), I probably wouldn't have spent the money, but I'm glad I did. In the end it comes down to what your dog means to you. I didn't have the money, but I made it work. Your call......
If you want details on the loan info, drop me a PM......
