Would it be possible to source a new 1VD-FTV 4.5L turbo diesel V8 and a H150F transmission here in the USA? I thought it would make for a cool swap into an FJ40, or a FJ45 pick up project. I have a friend who is living in Australia, and thought maybe I could get him to ship this combo to the states. Thanks for any input. Brendon

Might have a bit of trouble fitting the motor between the chassis rails, it is wide in the bottom end.

Go with the factory 6 cyl turbo diesel.
Apart from the width headaches with the V8 that Herb mentioned, there is a pandoras box of electronics to over come.
Unless you have deep pockets and the know how

Thanks for the info. I was just looking into the lastest Toyota diesel combiation. A kind of "if money was no object' type of build. I was thinking that the newness of this combination could be easily sourced new in the crate. :cheers:Brendon

If money were no object, I would love to see this build happen, and then i would need a bucket, because there would be some serious drooling going on...

There might be too much involved in a 40 swap. I am now thinking this combination would work much better in the Tundra. I think this chassis is very similar to the new 200 series:hmm:. The twin turbo with the manual trans would be cool. Has anyone heard of this being done?

I think the twin turbo with a manual box only comes in the ME versions. We dont get it in OZ
The computer on the engine probably needs the transmission it came with,so probably best sourced as a unit

Sounds cool but like someone else said I doubt it would fit in the 40, the 1HZ is a tight fit and Toyota had to re-engineer the 7X series so it would fit the bigger V8 ie, wider frame rails and bigger engine compartment.

Would love to work on that project though.

Thanks for the info. Just have to figure out how to sorce a ME series drivetrain?:hmm: It is probably impossible, but I think it is worth looking in to.

1HD-T it's a tight fit in a 40 .. you will end with a tiny rear DS .. but doable for sure ... ( moving few inches backwards the rear axle to gain more space ) I'm pretty sure a half cut will be better since it will come with the ECU that match with the tranny .. ( manual sure )

Damn that's beasty for a diesel, wish I had the cash to buy a newie.

Here you go. This is not an FJ40 but it will give the OP some idea of what this engine would be like in terms of size.

I'm considering this swap (well in the future) for my 60 series. This all depends on whether or not the prices for these engine come down or not. The 1VD-FTV with an H55F in my FJ60 would be the beas knees.:steer:

GREAT info! Thanks for posting.:cheers:Brendon

No problem! It's what the forum is all about, sharing information.

I have a friend who specializes in tuning diesels...mostly VW TDI engines, but he'll tune other diesels as well. In short he is awesome at getting way more power out of a turbo diesel that it should have had in the first place and doing it safely. So a diesel is in my FJ60's future for sure.

Trust me this engine swap is something I dream about on a regular basis. For us Yankees the best scenario is to buy a wrecked 70 series and import it. I would probably just import the engine and drive train. Importing a 70 series probably wouldn't fly with customs since the 70 series does not meet safety regulations for the US. ie not air bags, ABS and ect. I've decided that when I attempt this (if I attempt it) I will fly to Australia and go to the auctions. One thing you want to make sure i is that the engine will run. The website I posted also talks about repairing the engine before putting it in the truck.

Anyway those are just my thoughts. I've put some mental effort into thinking of the best alternative to my 2F. I know there are turbo diesels state side that do pretty well for themselves but I'd like to explore my options.

All 70 series 'Cruisers from mid-ish 2009 on have driver and passenger airbags, just so you know.

Good to know! Thanks. I wish I could just buy a troop carrier and drive it in the US.

Is it possible to buy a new 70 Series in Austraila,or the Middle East, \ dismantel it, ship to the US, and rebuild here legally. I guess I am asking for the loop-hole. Is there one? Although costly, it would technically be a parts vehicle right? Or does it have to be wrecked. If not possible, can a new engine trans combo be sourced ( kind of how we can get a GM crate engine here) and shipped here legally? Thanks for any info.:cheers:Brendon

Parts you can import (axles, wheels, body's even) But the engines are what customs gets picky about. If its not 25 years old, you probably wont be able to import the vehicle; wrecked or not. I would imagine that if you shipped in the chassis, then the body, then the engine, the only thing they may have hang you up on are the body and engine.

What may be possible, is to put the engine into a 25 year old car out of country (for example, get the engine bolted into a 1987 fj60 while its in Australia) then import it as "original". It would still be just as illegal.

Another option that iv heard of; get a 79 series from Australia, ship it to mexico or canada, drive it over the boarder as a temporary travel vehicle (they give your truck part time registration in the US), you then drive it to a shop, swap engines with your 40, drive the 79 BACK over the boarder, and sell it in mexico with a 2f in it or something. Then you get your engine and anything you want to strip from the truck, and nobody is the wiser that you robbed the original engine out of it. (That would be one hell of a process, but if money is no object......)
