So after my 2.5yr old son saw a few different RC cruisers at Cruise Moab this year I'm thinking about getting one.

I'm a total RC noob so help me out with something that won't break the bank or break down every time I use it. I looked at the Axial webpage and had no idea there were so many options from just one maker. I think it definitely should be a rock crawler type that does not move at the speed of light. He'll have a better chance of learning how to drive it.

Will any 1/10 scale body work on a 1/10 chassis? (I'd like to build an 80 series RC unit if possible to match real truck) Looking on EBay it seems this hobby can get out of control in a big way.

Anyway what are a few recommendations in the $300 range give or take

I got my boy a Losi Mini Rock Crawler (MRC), Ready to Run (RTR)
Its a very capable crawler, 1/18th scale, about $200.
The many plastic parts are less rigid than competitors want (sloppy handling for serious drivers) but flex better for the impacts.
Includes everything and easy to charge. Parts are available to upgrade or just repair. The 80 body can be found in the 1/24th scale as a Tamiya non-rc model. (ABS plastic-"hard body"). http://www.ebay.com/itm/1991-TAMIYA...184?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item46038ef4f0

In the 1/10th scale, RTRs will run at least $200, and most times don't include batteries and sometimes other electronics (motors, servos, etc.). The 1/10th 80 body is clear lexan, and probably $80. Generally this size weighs enough to hurt an ankle, and parts break easier due to mass and power.

hope this helps, and have fun!

I have an Axial Honcho kit that I really like. Any of the Axial RTR stuff is going to be pretty good out of the box, radio and all. You can always upgrade pieces as you want or need to. I am thinking of picking up a Wraith kit before the kits go the way of the doodoo bird.

And yes the hobby can get out of control in a hurry, kind of like owning a cruiser. :)

I ended up with a Tamiya CC01 with an 80 series body for free from one of our Rising Sun Club members. It needs a few things but will be a good place for the 2 year old to start learning to drive.

I need a controller, battery, and what ever the thing is called inside the the controller talks to. Other than that is a roller.

receiver is what you are after. The radio you buy should come with one. I have a spektrum system myself.

I might also advise you to look at the lipo batteries if the ESC that it came with can run them. The run-times are significantly longer than with standard stick packs. No matter what battery style you get, invest in a quality charger. It will make you batteries last much longer.

Oh and pictures or it doesn't exist...;p

Bang for buck I would get a Flysky gt3b. Cheap, and if need more channels look up losikid (IIRC) on rccrawler.com. I ended up with a 6 channel tx and rx for under $100, and nice controller IMO.

Ya, appears to be the same. I bought mine direct from his site.

Products - OverkillRC

EDIT: And Im a complete noob in this stuff too.
