How come the 1pz engine is only used for a few years? -90/-91?

If i am right it is a five cylinder version of the 1hz?

Is it not quite expensive to develop a five cylinder version just for a few years when they already had the six cylinder 1hd-t?

Yes,a 5cyl version of the 1HZ
Its a weirdo. I think they were introduced to replace the 3B. It also came with a smaller gearbox,so some money was saved.
Developing it would not have been much, the dimensions are the same as the 1HZ,so the tooling and molds were just copied with one cyl removed.

Hello,

I read somewhere that the 1PZ engine was discontinued because it did not meet emission requirements. Is this true?

Maybe ,but I couldn't see why it would be worse than a 1HZ if it was based on engine size.

My guess is people weren't buying it. Why buy 5 cyl when you can get 6.

why give the public a choice and be forced to stock parts when you can just supply the 1HZ and call it a day?
also, if you wanted a lighter version of the LC then the LJ and KZJ were already available.

but i suspect it was lack of demand, the cost of purchase was not that much cheaper for the PZ models.

Hello,

The 1PZ is one of those diesel engines whose rumble means business. Too bad it was discontinued.

Maybe it was some management genius who decided it was not profitable to offer both 5- and 6-cylinder power plants; the decision could have been masked as an emissions compliance issue. Managers.

Those who can, do; those who can't, teach; those who neither can nor teach, administrate... No flames intended.

I have heard mixed reviews on this engine. Is this a reliable workhorse like the 3B or a problem like the L series?

ummm, it is a HZ knock off... what do you think?

you can break anything, well i can. the PZ has stood up to my testing for quite a while. hydro locking, high revs, lugging, turning bigger tires on the highway with the rest of the drivetrain in stock configuration.

so far so good.

i also "tested" the L series, it didn't fair near as good. then replaced the head with new and tested again with less than satisfactory results. the head went again.

OK, thanks for answering,no hardcore facts but it seems to be that I thought

So I have the 1PZ, and I'm currently running 10W30 in it. but I don't believe I'm getting the correct oil pressure should I jump up to 15W40? which to my reading and understanding so far this is better oil for diesels

20-50 is what Toyota Australia recommend. But 10-40 is ok. Same oils as a 1HZ or 1HD T

Toyota does a lot of things correctly, however producing accurate oil pressure gauges isn’t among those items. I would highly recommend a good quality, aftermarket oil pressure gauge.

I think they made the 1PZ because a 5cyl is very well balanced and smooth. It may have been meant for the Euro market but obviously Japan and Latin America got lots of them too.

I think it is a great engine but lacks power like most NA diesels.

Cheers

The 1PZ should have been a blessing and an alternative to those who couldn’t tolerate the eye watering acceleration of the 1HZ. 😊
