wrong, young buddy.
i sold them because that is what the customer wanted. i warn them ahead of time and if they still want them... well ... it is their money.

if it makes you feel any better, the wife likes the 81... and her gas 80 back in the day.

seriously, you can get a gasser 80 for DIRT cheap in Japan is super clean shape. roughly half the price and the 93-95 gassers got high teens for mileage and the 81s are getting low 20s...

anywho, why do you need a mall queen to tow the snowbuggies when you have your high horsepowered bush basher? stick a camper on the back, trailer in tow and away you gooooooo....

You don't need to make me feel better - I have owned them - both types so I got a handle on it thanks. The gasser does not get high teens - never unless you consider 16mpg in the best conditions ever to be good, usually 14-15mpg. I just like the diesel 81's - love em, but I don't like when something goes wrong - cha-ching. Now give me that gasser engine in a 70 series for a weekend toy - lotsa fun.

Don't want to drive the 79 in the winter - too nice, and too small to strap 2 growing boys in. No camper for me - I like camping in a cottage like that one in Calabogie.

And about the LJ's - "because that is what the customer wanted" - lol, you just keep telling yourself that.

nah, that was about the 81s, the LJs was a $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ learning curve. even if a customer wants one of them they are sent elsewhere.

so your telling me you would turn someone away who said I want an LJ79 and I know all about the 2L-T. You have 20 Grand get me one.
And he didn't give a s*** about the s***ty head things. That was the least of his concern. If its what the customer wants and he is educated and has been told on numerous occasions why would you turn him away. You could steer him towards something else.

As for the HDJ81. Mine will be coming up when I get back from my May trip to University. I will be doing some fun installs to it this weekend for preventative maintenance. You have to admit Wayne, when you got that beautiful locked, lifted, winched white five speed hdj81 you can't tell me that you weren't absolutely giddy for that thing. That was a diamond of a truck. I gawked at that thing when I was hunting for mine.

I really like the hdj81. For a truck that has a nice powerful engine for highway cruising to the ski hill and having enough gusto to pass the odd car its great. I can have 3-4 friends in my truck and everyones comefortable. Shes been super reliable to me and I don't have to worry about that truck at all. It has everything that someone would need an more. I had to wait months for mine to come up because I was picky. Being picky paid off as far as I am concerned. I figure the plus side of my truck is I have kept all receipts and maintenance records. I did good PM, never abused it and shes full of goodies. The person who buys it will appreciate it as much as I do if not more.

The main reason why I want an HZJ77 is when I think of a landcruiser doing trips and expeditions is a 70 series. The bloody design of them hasn't really changed from 85 to 20**. There simplistic and I love that. They are smooth ride and i love the aesthetical appeal to them. It just gets to me. I grew up with a 70 and I have had plenty of excellent memories growing up with that truck and reliable as hell. That is the main reason why I bought a landcruiser. My dads 73 just gets to me as well. Its a great little truck. I know the 77 wlll not appeal to a lot of people comparing to the 81 but I don't care about anyone else but me. Its my truck and I like them and I don't care if you don't.
It will be a little bit of a turtle comparing to a 81 but the 81 isn't a race car either I drive the speed limit because I get good fuel economy. If I want speed I will import myself a Lancer Evolution.
If I want more power to the 77 I will turbo and intercool it. I am also really wanting on because of the 5 speed H55F over the automatic a442f.

I can tell you that I plan on keeping this 77 for a while. The 4 door is more appealing to me because I am still hauling people and the extra room is nice. I plan on doing a few simple mods to it over time. When I am older I would love to own a HZJ73 or a HZJ70. Shorties really appeal to me but the practicality for what I am doing at this point in my just doesn't fit.

Enough of my rant. You guys get the point.
Lewis your truck rocks. nuff said.

FB,
THAT is exactly what i am saying. when we had 3 heads go in a month (a few years back now) and had to warranty them i sat down with the wife. we discussed finances and the profit and loss margins. we made 20% profit on each unit we sold. the head jobs cost us $4000 each. $12000 loss for a small company as ours damn near sent us under.
we had 2 super clean LJ78 units sitting and i had a young guy show up at the door wanting to buy the grey one. i sat for an hour and a half chatting with him about the head issues. he REALLY wanted the grey one but i wouldn't sell it to him.
two reasons, respect for the customer and even with a "the head is s*** and NO WARRANTY" statement there would still be hard feelings when it did go.

he left my place and headed to Canyon Creek Toyota where he bought one. he called me a week later from Hope BC and the LJ had puked its head. he limped 20 hours back to Calgary and fought with the dealer for a replacement head.

this experience drove the stake into the LJ history with me.

the 2 units i had became test units to see if there was anything we could do to prevent the problem from happening. i had strong demand for the LJ78s. after thousands more were dumped into the over heating issues possible cures i finally through in the towel.

no matter how much money you have i will not sell you a LN or LJ or KZJ model Land Cruiser. go see Louis but i doubt he will sell you one either. he has respect for his customers too. there are lots of importers that will sell you one, they are in it for the money and don't give a rats ass about the after effects.

as for the white 81 (and the one beige one), yep i was all hot and bothered. they were sweet ass rigs.
but
the short comings started to show up. the weaker auto behind the HDT. the sensitive throttle issue behind the direct injection.

really? the 81 is a beautiful machine. it rides smooth, it gets decent fuel economy, the engine is quiet, the interior is luxurious and quiet. it is a sweet ass long distance commutor or traveler.

i expected better fuel economy.
i expected the auto to last longer pulling a load.
i didn't expect the sensitive throttle issues.

these issues can be remedied (except the fuel) so i have no issues selling the vehicles.

i inform the potential customers of the issues, i change out the BEBs so i can sell them with a clean conscience.

<i LOVE the 77 and will spend the extra to own on of them>

Frankenstein is a bastard child but it is what the LJ78 should have been.

Wayne, I don't have customers anymore, haven't for years, I got out when I saw the market flooding and the clincher was REVCAN keeping my GST for 11 months for an audit - they ended up slapping me on the wrist for an entertainment expense of 18 cents (yes 18 cents). So I closed my doors literally after I had the conversation with revcan about the 18 cents.

I'd try the 95 KZJ model, there is one here and I'd be willing to try it knowing that there could be a problem - but I wouldn't sell them to anyone. And - for ontario flatlanding they would be better suited as I don't think they were designed for the mountains in BC and the heavy foot of cdn's who "Just gotta get there".

you could very well be right, in the rurals the KZ might stand up.
buck a head wind, or climb Rogers pass and i suspect an issue will show up sooner or later. after the crap with the L series i will wait a couple years before bringing one in. i just can not afford thousands in warranty work again. i am still recovering from before.

as for RevCan, paper pushing, arrogant fawktards... you owe them money and they want every cent, they owe you money and they will audit you till they burn up what they owe... and then bill you for their time.

cheers

Hello,

For a moment Wayne sounded like the "honest" used car salesman next door...;) Thankfully he explained himself.

There are a few too many things that can go wrong with a used car if you are not careful enough, and it is good when you get good advise about it. It can make the difference between a good ride and a disaster.

Not in ZA ! - bout 180 K kms is the end of it. Our ave heat might have something to do with it and therefore explain the differance but in general, their reputation sucks after 200K kms !

Maybe they are just not suited for a big heavy cruiser or 4runner. Or maybe it is just a piece of s***?

maybe they are best suited for these boats
