No prob, if that were my truck the next mod I would make (from the type of trekking you do) would be a water/air intercooler, scrap any ideas of air/air if you have them. You could set the small rad in front of the radiator, they do it successfully in oz. It makes a dramatic difference and is much better than air/air in my opinion - having tried both in my truck.

Ya, I put an aux cooler in the 73 for the trani, so I can see how it fits in front of the rad. Just need to look into how to connect it to the turbo and get the plumbing in there.

Thanks Louis, have a great summer!

top mount air to air.
increase the boost and the EGTs drop.
increase the fuel and the EGTs climb (heat in heat out)

water intercooler is supposed to be nice but a complete cooling system needs to be installed. KISS principal.

<congrats on stealing that truck>

...a water pump and pipes from the cooler to/from the heat exchanger (radiator).

Thanks, Wayne! Thought you knew I got that rig?

I thought so, increasing fuel means more burning more heat.

As for increasing the boost, would that be a waste-gate adjustment and if so , how do I do this? and if not, how do you increase boost without adding more fuel?

Hey Simon, good to hear form you. Hope all is well.

Can one not use or simply tap into the current cooling system and also add the cooler at the same time without adding another water pump?

Yes increasing fuel increases EGT's, my bad, on the night portion of my long shift at the firehall. But, you can increase the boost and and your egts will go down but that will only help so much there is no magic bullet and guys are always trying to figure out how to lower the egt's, go intercooler and you will be much further ahead - hillbilly style like waynes is pretty god awful looking, the water/air does require some plumbing but it is a very easy set up and just works better.

You could just use a turbo smart waste gate controller, it is plumbed inline between the turbo compressor housing and the wastegate actuator. Just turn the dial for more boost - keeps the wastegate from opening.

No - you want cool fluid not hot engine coolant. Go to 4wdmonthly.com and do some searches - alot more info on there and on outerlimits4x4.com than here = tried and tested way more than anything here.

Yes, going OK, thanks.

No, you are trying to cool the compressed (and therefore heated) intake air back down closer to ambient air temperature.

The amibient air temp is lower than the engine coolant temp, using the normal engine coolant and radiator would heat up the intake air, instead of cooling it as a seperate dedicated intercooler heat exchanger would.

just to have 81 on the tag over 80 the 1 give some pretty good cool factor

easy there boys. People change their minds. I grew up with a bj70. I figured the 80 was what I wanted because it looked bigger, meaner and more luxury. My dads 73 was quite similar to his bj70 (engine difference). Its right up my alley. It will happen.

I love the HDJ81's, I'll be buying another one soon - I regret selling the one I had. A great tow vehicle and great for the family.

81s are s*** (and i don't mean the s***z)...
s***ty mileage
s***ty towing ability (want a tow vehicle buy a 7.3)
rides like a mall buggy (oh wait, that is what they are, duh)
over priced
s***ty trannies
s***ty bottom ends
s***ty room inside (77 is HUGE in comparrison)

the only good thing about a 81? i don't want one. had a few REAL clean ones so far and didn't do anything for me.
look like a mall queen, ride like a mall queen,

each to their own, the 8* are one (small) step above a FJLoser.

I only tow a snowmobile trailer, no 7.3 s*** boxes for me, I want a mall driver so the wife can take it, mileage - who cares, overpriced? HDJ81's can be had for 10-13K now.

They were awesome when you were selling them though - just like the imploding LJ models that you raved about - until that back fired on you. Wonder what your next flavour of the day will be?

We don't all want to be seen driving around in frankenhillbilly pasted together PZJTPIXOXLIKAMAIUBMO like you Wayne, I find the 80 series pretty darn nice - and it isn't a standard so I should be able to drive it.

But I enjoy your opinions - colourful.

wrong, young buddy.
i sold them because that is what the customer wanted. i warn them ahead of time and if they still want them... well ... it is their money.

if it makes you feel any better, the wife likes the 81... and her gas 80 back in the day.

seriously, you can get a gasser 80 for DIRT cheap in Japan is super clean shape. roughly half the price and the 93-95 gassers got high teens for mileage and the 81s are getting low 20s...

anywho, why do you need a mall queen to tow the snowbuggies when you have your high horsepowered bush basher? stick a camper on the back, trailer in tow and away you gooooooo....
