Bigbrowndog,

Could I get you 2 measure the imput shaft length from both trannies.

I'm doing a diesel swap also and I'm actually going to use the r151.

If you don't want it maybe I could take it off your hands. What tcase came with it?

I have an extra starter for a 1hz...but I doubt it will help you b/c it was from a h151 bellhousing.

after looking at the bellhousing pictures again...
does the 1hz bellhousing bolt to the tranny with only 4 bolts?

I know on the mini truck truck it uses 6 or 8

All cruiser trannies only use 4 bolts, at least the manual variety.

Bellhousings are best found at aussie parts yards- the last ones we got were $55 US each plus freight. It is critical that you get the cast support arms as well. There are two style arms, old and late but both work.

While you are at it, get an a/c compressor mount and compressor (I like R12 better than R134a so specify)...

Starter nosecones (the gear box) are also sourced used and easily rebuilt ($75 rebuild cost in Tucson) or you can take a reman 2L-T starter (12v) from Toyota to swap the motors out.

1HZ Inputs are BEST found in the US. Cruiseroutfitters or Mudrak may be able to get them through their source or Cabe Toyota, Cruiser Dan, John Hocker can get them from the parts house offline. They run about $200 w/ discount.

Please remember, ENS etc are the highest prices for new parts in North America. Like starvin Marv, you go there when you need the part tomorrow. There are many HZ parts found easily from other sources (TLCruiserman etc).

majority of manual LC transmissions are 4 bolt connection to bellhousing including the cast iron H55 to aluminum 1HZ unit.

Great thread guys. I also picked up 8 of the 1HZ's from a mine in Nevada (all spoken for, sorry). We were able to source all of the needed parts. Beleive it or not I grabbed my 1HZ to H55F bellhousing direct from Toyota (local dealer) however my clutch fork, pilot bearing and flywheel came from a source in Japan.

I spent a month in Aussie this summer and was able to located several reliable sources for new and used 1HZ parts. Was sorta refreshing to walk into a salvage yards in a small Aussie town and ask if he happened to have a 1HZ starter motor, points to one on the counter and asks "will this one work". They even let us borrow some tools to pull some needed brackets and such.

Whats your 1HZ going into?

One of the great things about owning a 1HZ here,is that the smaller and more remote a town is,the more likely they will have 1HZ parts.:D
Its the main truck for farmers and govt workers.

I've still got a couple for my personal projects. I'm still up in the air. I'd like to do a 1HZ/H55F 60, SOA, FF, SOA, etc. But I have sold 3 clean builder 60's all destined for this project and my SOA FJ62, 37's, ARB's, 4.88's, etc. It just didn't get used and I'm really aprehensive to build another vehicle that will not get used.

So... my wife has a 66' 45 long bed that needs a motor and I'd really like to do a 1HZ in my 40? Still up in the air as you can tell.

1HZ's were everywhere in Aussie , we spent a considerable amount of time in them (HZJ105).

A 1HZ in a 45 would be cool. One thing I like about the 1HZ in oz,is that the more remote the area, the more likely you can find parts or someone who knows the engine inside out.
I stopped at Warakirna roadhouse(in W Aust,300 miles west of Uluru)a few years back and the mechanic had 6xHZJ75 and a couple of Hiluxes on his to do list;)

I have a 1hz in my 45 lwb. Its a good fit and has decent power. A turbo would be nice though.
If ever want to get rid of one of the 1hz just let me know.

Matt

Tell me about it :D

We stopped at a small wrecker in Alice Springs who had a decent collection of Land Cruisers in the yard. I walked into the counter and asked if he happened to have a loose 1Z starter motor. He points to the other end of the counter where a loose starter is sitting

We ended up scoring some other misc brackets and goodies and I did find a 1HZ to H55F bell housing loose on a pallet in the yard but one of the 4 mounting hold threads was damaged.

shameless advertisment...

Sorry Guys But I can't help but mention I have some awesome New Turbo Glide 1HZ turbo's sitting in my inventory waiting for a nice home (please help before I install them on more of my own 1HZ's).

What can I say all this talk about 1HZ gets me excited :D
West Coast Cruisers

Cheers,

Michael

After some research of my own...The bellhousings pictured in this thread both mate to a h55. They do use four bolts. However, The 1hz-r151 belhhousingdoes not. It uses 8-10 from the pictues I've seen.. Just like r151 found in the mini truck.

Still trying to figure out the input shaft length of the r151/1hz tranny?????

I sold my R151f that bolted to the 1HZ, so I can't measure the input shaft for you, but I can give you a picture of the bellhousing bolted to the transmission.
r151 bellhousing.webp

I sold it to a member here, so perhaps he can measure it, if it's still out and available. He may have torn into the transmission already though.

Thanks Dan,
I sent that pic to the company making the adapter so hopefully they can tell me if its a match.

One question about your 151...Did it go into 5th gear. I've heard rumors that the mines used a block off plate for 5th to keep speed down. I looking at buying the one Heem has for sale. He's told me it won't go into 5th.

Do you mind if I ask what you sold yours for? pm me if you don't want to post it.

It did go into 5th. The 5th gear seemed way far "out there," but it definitely shifted into 5th on mine.

I sold it for $250 plus shipping (shipping was nearly that much). That's exactly what I bought it for, and I wasn't trying to make a profit, just get it out of the shop. Because I bought it not knowing what it was, and then found out that it wasn't much use to me in my 45, I just needed it gone. I'm pretty sure I could have sold it for a good bit more than that if I had waited.

Dan
